Varnish Run Still Soft? Wait Before Leveling It
A varnish run that smears, stretches or loads fresh abrasive immediately is not ready for leveling. Stop the trial and let the coating reach the condition required by its manufacturer. The thin film beside a run may feel dry before the thicker accumulation is ready, so the surrounding surface is a poor substitute for checking the defect itself.
Do not solve that mismatch by pressing harder or moving straight to a coarse grade. Either can tear the run and cut through the sound coating beside it. First establish whether the problem is a fresh sag, a persistent soft coating, or a cured ridge that can be reduced in a controlled repair.
Read the timing that belongs to this job
Find the exact varnish, application date, number of coats and any thinner used. Check the conditions specified for drying, recoating and sanding. Those terms describe different stages. A stated recoat interval does not necessarily mean a heavy drip is ready to be flattened.

Check whether the work has been in a cool corner, exposed to dew or moved between very different conditions. Record what actually happened. Do not invent a cure time from how dry a different varnish felt on a previous project.
If the entire coat stays soft beyond the manufacturer's expected conditions, ask the coating supplier about the application history. Waiting indefinitely and repeatedly testing a failing film can become another source of damage. Identification comes before a new removal or recoating plan.
Protect the sound coating while checking readiness
Choose a small part of the run that can be included in the eventual repair. The trial should answer whether the coating cuts cleanly, not attempt to finish the whole defect. Keep vulnerable edges and adjacent hardware outside the working area.
Use a fresh piece of the specified abrasive on an appropriate support. For a flat face, a small flat block helps avoid concentrating pressure in the surrounding film. A curved rail needs support that respects the curve; forcing a flat block against it can create a different shape.
Make a brief, light trial, then stop to inspect both the coating and the abrasive. Smearing, rolling fragments, a dragging surface or a fresh sheet rapidly coated with sticky material are reasons to stop. Do not add an unapproved lubricant to make an unready film seem sandable.
Clean-cutting residue and a stable, reducing ridge support proceeding with care, but they are not proof that every layer is fully cured. Continue to respect the product's sanding and recoating instructions. If a lower layer becomes soft as the run is reduced, stop again.
Two surfaces, two different decisions
Consider an illustrative handrail varnished the previous afternoon. The broad upper surface feels dry, but a thick run on the underside rolls into sticky particles during a light trial. The owner should leave the run for further curing under suitable conditions, rather than use the dry upper surface to justify sanding harder underneath.
After the required conditions are met, a new trial may cut the run cleanly. The useful change is the behavior of that trial, not merely the number of hours on the clock. If the run still smears, the record of product, thinning and conditions becomes the next troubleshooting input.
Keep the test area small enough that you can see whether you have enlarged it. A broad dull halo around an unchanged run shows that surrounding coating is being removed faster than the defect. Stop before that halo becomes a sand-through.
Level the excess, then prepare the repair area
Once the coating is ready, distinguish reducing the raised run from preparing the surrounding sound film for the next coat. Those stages may require different treatment. The grade used to reduce excess is not automatically the final scratch pattern required beneath the repair coat.
Where the approved preparation specifies 320 grit, 320-grit sheets in a 10-sheet pack provide fresh pieces for controlled hand work. Confirm the product's actual instruction first. Finer paper is not a substitute for adequate curing, and a new pack cannot resolve a chemically unsound film.
Inspect under changing light after cleanup. The raised distortion should diminish without exposing bare wood or creating a broad depression. If the remaining defect is lower than its surroundings, further sanding is heading in the wrong direction; the repair needs a different filling or recoating decision.
Avoid recreating the same run
Before recoating, consider what caused the original accumulation. Check the specified application thickness, thinning limit and technique for vertical or underside surfaces. Practice the corrected application on a spare coated sample when available. Do not flood the repaired area merely to make its sanding marks disappear.
Inspect the next coat after its stated drying period. Judge the repair's profile and appearance together.
