Do You Need to Sand Between Hardwax-Oil Coats?
You do not automatically need to sand between hardwax-oil coats. A dry, smooth first coat may be ready for the next application exactly as it stands. Sanding becomes useful when there is something specific to remove, such as raised fibers or a dried speck, and the product's procedure permits that correction.
First identify what you applied. “Oil finish” can mean a penetrating oil, a hardwax oil, an oil-modified varnish or a product that cures with a separate hardener. Their coating schedules are not interchangeable.
What a normal second coat looks like
For a concrete example, Osmo's Polyx-Oil Original instructions specify a thin application along the grain, drying with good ventilation, and then a second thin coat. The clear version lists approximately 8–10 hours before that second application. The standard application sequence does not insert an obligatory sanding stage.
That interval is a drying guide for the named product, not a deadline that overrides a still-tacky surface. Full cure takes longer: the same instructions give 2–3 weeks. A surface can therefore be ready for its second coat without being ready for unrestricted use.
If the first coat is dry, clean and smooth, remove settled dust without scratching the surface and apply the next thin coat. There is no benefit in removing good finish simply because sanding between coats was necessary on a previous polyurethane project.
Rough, sticky and uneven are different problems
Run a clean hand lightly over the dry surface and examine it in angled light. Then decide which condition you actually have:
- A few dry raised fibers or specks: These are localized high points. A permitted light de-nibbing operation may remove them without reworking the surrounding surface.
- A tacky surface or smeary patches: Postpone sanding and recoating. Excess application, drying conditions or another product issue needs resolving first.
- A visible scratch in the wood: Another oil coat does not erase the cut. Repairing it may require returning the affected area to bare wood and restoring the original preparation and color.
The third condition is especially easy to misread. A fine abrasive may improve the feel of the oil while leaving the deeper wood scratch visible. Continuing until the scratch disappears can create a pale patch where surrounding color remains.
Remove only the dried roughness
Osmo Canada's sanding guidance distinguishes bare-wood preparation from finer abrasion between coats, listing 320 and 400 grit for the latter. Use this as a correction within the applicable product system; it does not mean every first coat must be sanded.
For a light correction that calls for 320 grit, cut eQualle 320-grit sheets to fit a small hand support. The 10-sheet format lets you replace a loaded piece instead of pressing harder with it.
Use very light contact along the grain on the dry rough spot. Wipe away the residue and feel again. Stop as soon as the high point is gone. Keep away from a sharp edge unless that edge itself needs correction; its thinner coating is easily removed.
If the paper smears material, drags strongly or forms sticky clumps, stop. Do not add water to make the paper slide. Clear the sanding residue before the next coat, using the finishing system's cleanup method.
When too much oil is the issue
Sanding wet excess into a slurry is not the normal Polyx-Oil coating method. It can spread the problem across sound areas and obscure whether the surface has actually dried.
Osmo's advice on sticky oiled worktops identifies overapplication as a common cause and recommends removing excess with a lint-free cloth. For an already sticky surface it describes allowing it to dry before gentle buffing. Follow the remedy for your exact product and the stage it has reached; do not bury tackiness under another coat.
Keep oily cloths and abrasive waste under the product's fire-safe handling instructions. Do not leave oil-soaked cloths piled on the bench.

For the next coat, the useful endpoint is simple: a dry, clean surface with no unwanted high points. If it already meets that condition, leave the abrasive aside and continue the specified application schedule.
