Sanding Between Lacquer Coats: Two Products, Different Instructions
“Lacquer” on a can does not tell you whether to sand between coats. Minwax Clear Brushing Lacquer specifies recoating without intercoat sanding. General Finishes Enduro Water-Based Pre-Cat Lacquer specifies finish sanding between coats. Both instructions can be correct because they belong to different products.
Before treating every coat to the same abrasive progression, identify the full product name and the application method. Then distinguish the work required for the next coat from optional correction of a rough surface.
Two schedules worth keeping separate
- Product
- Minwax Clear Brushing Lacquer
- Manufacturer's intercoat instruction
- Recoat after at least two hours; no sanding required between coats.
- What it means at the bench
- A sound, clean, smooth coat does not need a routine grit sequence merely because another coat is coming.
- Product
- General Finishes Enduro Water-Based Pre-Cat Lacquer
- Manufacturer's intercoat instruction
- Finish sand between coats with a fine 220–320 foam sanding pad or 400-grit sandpaper.
- What it means at the bench
- Include the specified light sanding and dust removal in this spray-applied system.
The Minwax application directions and General Finishes Enduro instructions support these different schedules. Neither is a universal instruction for automotive lacquer, instrument finishes, or another manufacturer's catalyzed coating.
The distinction matters even when two panels look equally glossy. Surface appearance cannot identify the binder or establish the next coat's preparation requirements. Keep the can or product record with the work until the finish is complete.
Make Enduro's sanding step a light preparation
For Enduro Water-Based Pre-Cat Lacquer, first allow the coat to dry under the specified conditions. General Finishes describes a useful check: a light pass should produce powder. If the coating gums or smears, give it more time instead of switching to a coarser sheet.
On a flat panel, fit fresh 400-grit paper to a clean support and use controlled, overlapping hand movement. Remove the dust after a short pass. You should be reducing the small raised roughness and preparing the film, without uncovering stain or wood below it.
The eQualle 25-pack of 400-grit sheets supplies the sheet-paper grade listed for this step. Cut the 400-grit sheets to the support so loose folds cannot make a ridge. A foam sanding pad is a different abrasive format; do not substitute 220-grit paper simply because the instructions also mention a 220 pad.
Treat panel edges separately with very light contact. Repeatedly sanding a tiny remaining shiny recess can remove the surrounding high area first. If a deep sag, depression, or crater remains, stop the routine intercoat work and plan that defect's repair. A fine preparation pass is not an unlimited leveling allowance.
Remove dust as specified for Enduro before applying the next coat. Do not carry a mineral-spirits cleanup instruction from a different lacquer into this water-based system.
What if the Minwax coat feels rough?
“No sanding required” does not mean a dust nib must be left in place. It means sanding is not a blanket prerequisite for every recoat. If the coat has a defect, let it dry and obtain the appropriate correction method for that product and the depth of the defect. The basic Minwax application directions do not provide a universal intercoat abrasive grade to copy.
There is also a compatibility boundary before recoating an old piece: Minwax expressly says not to apply this lacquer over polyurethane. Sanding that existing finish dull does not cancel the restriction.
Short lacquer-sanding tip
For your working notes, record the exact product, coat completion time, drying conditions, and required preparation. Follow one verified schedule through the project. A shared finish name is not a reason to combine two different sets of instructions.
