Test a Sanding Stick Before Using It Beside Window Glass
A narrow sanding stick can reach a wooden window grid, but fitting into the gap does not prove that it is safe to use there. Exposed abrasive along the side, a rocking support, or a stroke that runs beyond the wood can scratch the glass or change the profile. Test the complete stick on a mock corner before bringing it to the window.
This method is for identified wood and a known compatible finish system. Before disturbing an older painted window, have unknown coatings assessed and choose the appropriate work method. Do not treat glazing compounds, weather seals, or the glass itself as surfaces to sand with the wood abrasive.
Measure the working face and the clearance separately
Identify the exact face you intend to sand. A flat strip, a rounded molding, and an inside corner need different support. Measure the available clearance, but also look at the direction in which the tool must move.
A stick can fit between two boundaries when stationary and still strike the glass as your hand changes angle. Allow for the abrasive thickness, any wrap or overlap, and the way the backing bends under pressure. Test the tool as an assembled unit, not as a bare wooden strip.
Choose a support that preserves the intended shape. Do not force a flat rigid tool into a curved profile and then use extra pressure to make it contact everything. If the tool cannot reach the surface without touching something else, use a more suitable detail tool or obtain advice on disassembly and refinishing.
Build a mock corner
Use scrap material to reproduce the narrow wooden face and an adjacent boundary. The boundary does not need to be actual window glass for the initial fit test; it should make accidental contact easy to see without risking the window.
Mark the mock boundary and run the assembled sanding stick through its intended stroke with very light pressure. Check for contact marks outside the working face. Try the natural hand positions you will use at the real window, including near the ends of the stroke.
The mock-up is a fit and control test, not a certification that the abrasive cannot scratch glass. If the tool touches the boundary, correct its shape, wrapping, or stroke before proceeding. Do not rely on a layer of tape to make a poorly controlled tool harmless.
Keep abrasive on the intended working area
Inspect the sides and ends of the stick. A loose flap can fold outward during use. An overlap can create a local hump that changes pressure. A torn corner can expose a sharp edge or collect debris.
Secure the paper using a method compatible with the support and the job. Keep any fastening material away from the working face and adjacent window surfaces. Recheck the assembled tool after replacing the abrasive, since a new wrap may fit differently.

Practice the stop before the full stroke
Locate where the stick must stop at each end of the wooden face. Start with a stroke short enough that the support remains fully controlled. Avoid accelerating through the last part of the pass or lifting one end abruptly while the abrasive still contacts the profile.
A useful practice is to pause at the intended endpoint on the mock-up, inspect the tool's position, and then lift it clear. If the tool tends to rotate into the boundary, change the grip or support. A comfortable long stroke on a tabletop may be inappropriate on a narrow grid.
Where possible, support your working hand so the motion is repeatable. Do not use the glass as a brace for a gritty glove, dirty pad, or abrasive-covered tool. Keep the surrounding area free of particles that could be dragged across it.
Test the finish response on a small wood area
Once fit and control are satisfactory, test an inconspicuous area of the actual wood using the approved preparation method. Clean and inspect it before expanding the work. Check the profile as well as the scratch pattern.

If the surface becomes softer, uneven, or visibly thinned at an edge, reassess rather than making the stick more aggressive. Sanding is meant to prepare the identified surface, not erase every line around the glazing.
Reinspect the tool during the job
Stop periodically to check for loading, tears, loose paper, and trapped debris. Replace damaged abrasive and repeat the fit check after any change in wrapping or backing. A tool that passed the first test can change as the paper wears.
Keep separate tools for different materials or coatings. Do not bring a stick used on filler or another abrasive task back to the window without checking its condition. Store it so exposed abrasive does not pick up debris from the bench.
Finish the job by cleaning as specified and inspecting the wood and adjacent surfaces under useful lighting. Record the support dimensions, abrasive, and stroke that worked if you have more matching windows. The reliable result comes from a controlled tool that fits the actual task, not simply the narrowest stick you can make.
