Plan a 9 x 11 Sandpaper Cut List Before Cutting
A 9 × 11 inch sheet can produce twelve 1 × 8 inch strips or nine 1 × 10 inch strips. The shorter-strip layout needs one piece turned across the others to use the remaining space. Before cutting a pack into convenient-looking pieces, decide how long each strip must be for the support and your grip.
A cut list is especially useful for a batch of chair parts or short moldings. It lets you buy and cut the amount you need while keeping useful offcuts separate from waste.
Measure a paper pattern first
Wrap a strip of ordinary paper around the intended support or stationary workpiece. Leave enough at each end to hold it comfortably, then mark the required length and width. Try the motion without abrasive: if your fingers would run into the work or you would have to pull the strip tight to reach, change the pattern.
Width affects access. A strip that fits the broadest part of a molding may bridge a narrow hollow. Make the pattern fit the smallest area it must reach; use a separate wider piece for the broad surface if that is easier to control.
Keep this a hand-sanding layout. A cut sheet is not a substitute for a manufacturer's specified machine belt.
Compare both orientations
These counts assume a full, usable 9 × 11 inch sheet and cuts that do not remove a significant kerf. Check the actual sheet and mark all pieces before cutting.

The mixed layouts use the remainder before declaring it waste. After cutting nine 1 × 10 inch strips, however, the 1 × 9 inch remainder cannot supply another full-length strip for that batch. Keep it for a shorter job.
For an unusual size, divide the sheet length by the piece length and the sheet width by the piece width, round both results down, and multiply. Repeat with the piece turned a quarter turn. These are two starting layouts. Draw each remainder and check whether a turned piece fits there, as in the 1 × 8 and ¾ × 8 layouts above. Mark the full arrangement before making the first cut.
Turn the layout into a shopping quantity
If the cut list calls for 30 strips measuring 1 × 10 inches, three sheets yield only 27. Four sheets yield 36. You can cut 27 strips from the first three sheets and just three more from the fourth, leaving the remainder intact.

Cut, label and keep the usable remainder
Mark the grit on the back of every planned piece before separating it. A small offcut can lose all the factory printing, and surface color is not a dependable grit label. Cut on a protected bench with a tool intended for the material, following its cutting instructions and keeping your holding hand outside the cutting path.
Store unused pieces by grit and size. Keep dusty used strips elsewhere so they cannot contaminate clean finishing paper.
If a narrow strip keeps tearing under the grip needed for the job, reconsider the backing or support. Klingspor's backing guide distinguishes flexible paper from more tear-resistant cloth constructions. Getting more strips from a sheet is no saving when the strip cannot do the work.

After the first part, check the strip's usable contact area and grip length. Correct the pattern before cutting the rest of the pack.
