Avoid Sunken Glue Joints After Sanding a Wood Panel
A glued wood panel can feel flat immediately after sanding and later show a shallow line at the joint. Before sanding that line again, determine whether the joint is still changing as moisture equilibrates. Repeatedly sanding a moving surface can remove sound wood without fixing the cause.
This guide focuses on new solid-wood assemblies made with a water-based woodworking adhesive. A visible glue stain, an open joint, a failed bond, veneer damage, or a ridge from mismatched boards needs its own diagnosis.
Clamping time is not the whole waiting period
The adhesive's instructions may distinguish assembly time, minimum clamping time, and time before machining or loading. Removing the clamps does not automatically establish that the joint and nearby wood are ready for final surfacing.
Titebond defines a sunken joint as a depression associated with machining before the joint has fully cured. The manufacturer's guidance is a reason to respect the adhesive and material conditions, not a universal promise that every panel is ready after the same number of hours.

The table separates decisions; it does not identify an adhesive failure from appearance alone. Check the assembly history and inspect the actual surface under changing light.
Use a hold-and-inspect workflow
First, follow the glue maker's instructions for the assembly and the conditions in the shop. Allow the specified time before machining, and do not force the process by applying improvised heat.
Next, remove squeeze-out using a method appropriate to the adhesive, its cure state, and the surface. Avoid smearing residue into surrounding grain. Do not begin a finish-sanding sequence while a raised deposit is making the abrasive ride above the wood.
Inspect the panel for flatness and joint integrity before choosing a sanding step. A straightedge and raking light answer different questions: the straightedge helps reveal a height difference, while low-angle light highlights changes in texture. Neither establishes the bond's strength.
If the panel is still changing, pause. If it is stable and correction is appropriate, use a surfacing method matched to the amount of removal and the thickness available. Finish sanding is not a substitute for repairing a failed joint or leveling a severely misaligned assembly.
Refine the panel, not just the line
Once the assembly is ready and the surface has been properly leveled, sand with support that preserves the intended plane. Avoid narrow, repeated rubbing directly over the joint. That can turn a slight line into a wider hollow.

Add a checkpoint before the clear finish
After final preparation, clean the panel and inspect it again before applying finish. If the joint line has reappeared, do not bury it under a clear coat and hope it disappears. Reassess stability and the available correction allowance.
For repeated work, record the adhesive, assembly date, shop conditions, machining time, and the result of the later inspection. If the same issue returns, that history is more useful than adding another finer grit to every job.
