Prepare a Cedar Deck Post Without Sanding Through Hardware Boundaries

A cedar deck post is not simply a narrow deck board. Its corners are easy to soften, and post bases, rail brackets and fasteners interrupt the sanding path. Treat those fittings as fixed boundaries unless you can identify their role and follow an approved removal and reinstallation procedure.

The useful decision is whether the post needs cleaning, finish feathering or a separate moisture and hardware repair. Only one of those begins with sandpaper.

Diagnose the discoloration before abrading it

Inspect all four faces, the end grain, the area below caps and the wood immediately around hardware. Photograph each boundary before cleaning. Look for loose or cracked coating, dirt that follows splash patterns, fuzzy growth, dark staining that radiates from a fastener, and wood that stays damp longer than the surrounding face.

Western Red Cedar Lumber Association guidance separates these conditions. Its care and maintenance guidance calls for identifying dirt, mildew and extractive discoloration and correcting moisture sources. Its outdoor finishing guidance also notes that clean textured cedar may need no surface preparation at all.

Use the cleaner and method approved for the existing finish and the new coating system. Protect nearby plants and follow label precautions. Let the post dry as that system requires, then inspect it again. If staining quickly returns, wood remains soft or damp, or a connector is loose or corroded, stop surface preparation and have the cause assessed. Sanding deeper is not a moisture or connection repair.

Draw boundaries around hardware and arrises

Before working, draw a simple face map on paper. Mark every post base, guard connection, rail bracket, bolt head and counterbore. Add a narrow no-sand zone around any fitting that cannot be safely shielded. Do not push abrasive behind a plate, lever against it or loosen a fastener merely to make the sanding path continuous.

Protect a reachable boundary with a thin, clean, nonabrasive shield only when it can sit flat without being forced under hardware. Keep the abrasive on the wood side. Masking tape can help catch incidental scuffs, but it is not a structural shield and grit trapped beneath it can scratch a finish.

Treat each broad face separately. Stop a supported stroke before it rolls over the arris, then approach the adjacent face from that side. The endpoint is a clean, stable coating boundary and retained corner geometry—not a perfectly blended path beneath the metal.

Feather only the failed finish

The association's refinishing guidance directs removal of loose or cracked finish and feathering of the sound remaining edge. That does not require stripping every intact area or flattening cedar's existing texture.

Begin with a hand trial well away from the hardware. Use the coating maker's specified abrasive, support and endpoint. If that schedule calls for 120-grit sheet abrasive, 120-grit sheets in a 25-pack can be cut to fit a narrow, controlled support. Do not adopt 120 grit solely because it appears in a general deck example; rough-sawn cedar and intact factory texture may call for no sanding.

Feather from the failed area toward sound coating without dwelling at the boundary. Remove dust and check from the side. Stop if the sound finish edge keeps migrating, the cedar develops torn fibers, a face becomes hollow beside a bracket, or the corner begins rounding. A smaller piece of abrasive is not automatically safer if it concentrates fingertip pressure.

Inspect the transition before recoating

Vacuum and clean by the coating system's method. In raking light, check that the remaining finish edge is firmly attached, the cedar texture is consistent with the accepted trial and no shiny ledge remains at the feathered transition. Run a straight reference along each arris without scraping it; the corner should not dip beside hardware.

Finally, confirm how the selected coating handles end grain, hardware interfaces and previously finished areas. Coat only when the post meets its moisture and weather requirements. A good preparation stops neatly at a fixed fitting and leaves enough sound cedar for the finishing system—it does not make the hardware disappear.
