Sand and Prefinish a Floating Cabinet Panel Before Assembly

A solid-wood cabinet panel can shrink within its frame after the door is finished. If color stops exactly at the frame's inside edge, that movement can reveal a pale strip. Preparing and finishing the panel before assembly lets you carry the finish into the margin that the frame will cover.

This is a workflow for a new solid-wood floating panel, with the rails and stiles still separate. It assumes the door's joinery and movement allowance have already been designed. A glued-in MDF panel is a different construction.

Establish the fit before opening the finish

Dry-assemble the frame around the bare panel. Confirm that the panel tongue enters the groove without force and that the frame joints close. Follow the door or cutter system's specified expansion allowance; do not trim the panel to fill the groove from bottom to bottom.

For example, CMT's raised-panel door instructions deliberately allow for seasonal expansion and use centering strips. Their dimensions belong to that construction, so use your own system's layout rather than transferring a clearance number blindly.

Note which part of the panel is hidden by the frame. Identify the face and orientation on the back, then take the assembly apart. Make any fit corrections while the wood is bare. The finishing step should not become an attempt to force a thickened tongue into a tight groove.

Sand the loose panel for its actual finish

With the panel out of the frame, you can work along its grain without dragging the abrasive across a stile or into an inside corner. Support the broad field with a flat block. Use a support that follows any raised-panel profile, and keep it off the tongue's shoulders unless they actually need cleanup.

Choose the final sanding grade from the finish instructions. For an oak panel receiving General Finishes water-based stain, the manufacturer's raw-wood preparation guidance specifies 120, then 150, then 180 grit. eQualle 180-grit sheets in a 25-pack can be cut to fit the hand supports for that last stage. That sequence is a specific stain-and-wood example, not a rule for every cabinet coating.

Remove sanding dust from the field, profile and perimeter. Make the color sample on an offcut from the same panel stock before treating the door parts.

Carry the color past the future frame line

Apply the chosen finish to the panel according to its instructions, including the margin that will slide behind the frame. Avoid ending the color at the visible field. The point is to leave finished wood available if the panel contracts.

Keep the coating thin enough on the tongue to preserve its fit. Woodworker's Journal's finishing advice specifically warns that a heavy film can make panel edges too thick for their grooves. Work out that film thickness on the sample; do not discover it by clamping a freshly coated panel into place.

If you also prefinish the frame members, mask their mating glue surfaces. Rockler's guidance on prefinished parts explains why topcoat must stay off areas that need to accept wood glue.

Let the finish dry for handling and assembly as directed, then repeat the dry fit. When gluing the frame, keep adhesive out of the floating panel's grooves so the panel can move as designed.

A brief 180-grit molding-sanding example. Prefinishing and floating-panel assembly are separate operations described above.

During the remaining finishing work, avoid building a coating bridge between the panel and frame. The completed door should have a finished panel margin, sound frame joints and room for the solid wood to move.
