Make a Hand-Sanding Fence for a Square Door Edge
A narrow door edge gives a hand-sanding block very little support. As your wrist tilts, the paper crosses the corner and gradually rounds it. A simple L-shaped guide gives the tool a second bearing surface: one clean face slides on the broad door face while a perpendicular abrasive face works the edge.
This guide is for an existing straight edge that should remain square. It is useful beside a door profile only when there is an uninterrupted flat face for the guide to ride. A cove, bead, bevel or intentionally eased corner needs its own matching support; the guide below must not be used to turn that shape into a square edge.
Build two working faces, not a depth stop
Use two straight, rigid pieces of scrap to form an L. The horizontal piece is the runner. Its underside rides the door face without abrasive. The vertical piece is the cheek; its inside face carries a strip of abrasive and contacts the door edge.
Make the runner broad enough to remain stable on the available flat face and long enough to guide a short sanding stroke. Make the cheek deep enough to cover the edge being worked without catching the bench or clamps. The pieces need not match a standard plan size: the essential fit is to your door's thickness and available reference surface.
Before assembly, flatten and smooth the runner's contact surface and check that the cheek's working face is flat. Fasten the cheek along the runner's outer side, extending it below the runner to form the L. Use a reliable square to set the angle, clamp the pieces in position, and secure the joint so it cannot flex. Keep every fastener recessed and clear of both contact faces.
Attach the abrasive strip flat to the inside of the cheek with a smooth layer of removable double-sided tape. Keep it off the runner. Loose folds, tape overlaps or a curled strip change the contact you just established. At the inside corner of the L, there must be enough clearance for the door's corner and the paper edge to pass without jamming. Check this with the abrasive installed, not only with the bare jig.
The two faces have different jobs. Hold the runner against the broad door face to control tilt; use gentle sideways pressure to bring the abrasive cheek into contact with the edge. The guide controls angle. It does not limit how much wood you remove, and repeated strokes can still change the door's fit.
Prove the contact on scrap
Clamp a scrap of the same thickness with a known square edge. Seat the runner on its face and make one short pass. Remove the guide, clear the dust and examine where the abrasive touched.

Do not try to fix a poor contact pattern by pressing harder. A guide held at the wrong angle can reproduce the same error very consistently.
The use of a second bearing surface is also visible in commercial edge-sanding equipment. Festool describes its edge sanding guide as reducing tipping while maintaining edge contact. That supports the guiding principle; the scrap fixture here is for hand sanding only, not an attachment to a powered sander.
Use the abrasive specified for the surface
Fit the guide with the grade appropriate to the existing marks and next finish. A fixture does not make a coarse abrasive safe on a thin coating or veneer.
For bare-wood preparation following Minwax's wood-preparation guidance, 220 grit is a fine sanding step for removing remaining scratches and loose fibers. Where that step suits the door, eQualle 220-grit sheets in a 10-sheet pack can supply several narrow cheek strips; the 10-sheet quantity is suited to a small fixture trial. Keep the product and grade unchanged while testing the guide so a change in scratch pattern is easier to interpret.
Secure the door, keep the runner's path clean, and work along the edge with short controlled strokes. Lift and reset the guide before the runner loses its support at an end or a break in the profile. Do the inaccessible intersection separately with a fitting hand support. A longer sweeping stroke is not useful if the last part is unguided.
Short tip: keeping wood edges square
After dust removal, check both the edge and the door face. The intended result is an even preparation pattern with the original geometry preserved. If the corner was already rounded or the edge was out of square, this guide is not a reconstruction method. Resolve the shape or fit problem first; then use the guide to keep the finishing passes controlled.
