A Floor Recoat Test Failed: More Sanding or Better Diagnosis?
If a small floor-recoat test peels, do not assume the answer is more aggressive sanding across the room. The failed bond may involve contamination, the preparation method, the new finish, or a weak layer already on the floor. Find which condition failed before scaling up the work.
Keep the test area identifiable and preserve the product and preparation record. A failed sample is useful evidence if its history is known.
Separate the possible failure locations
Inspect the test as directed by the coating manufacturer. Did only the new layer release, or did older finish come away with it? Is the failure confined to one location, or does it occur wherever the same preparation was used?
These observations guide the investigation; they do not replace the manufacturer's compatibility or adhesion-test method. Do not improvise a pass/fail standard from how firmly a fingernail can scratch the surface.
Reconstruct what was on the floor
Ask about maintenance polish, wax, oil soap, previous coatings, and spot repairs. A surface can look clean while retaining an incompatible treatment. Strong water beading by itself does not identify wax or prove contamination is absent.

Do not mix cleanup products or use an aggressive solvent based on a guess about the old coating.

More sanding may remove additional material without resolving a chemical incompatibility. On textured or thin-wear-layer flooring, aggressive abrasion also creates a new risk of uneven removal.
Retest the corrected process in a suitable area
Once the cause and permitted correction are established, repeat the complete small-area process. Use the coating manufacturer's required drying and evaluation period. A fresh film that feels dry may not yet be ready for a meaningful test.
Document the result before extending it to the room. If it fails again, involve the finish manufacturer or a qualified flooring professional instead of repeating progressively coarser abrasion.

Release the job only after the sample passes
Keep the passing sample and its preparation record available throughout the project. A recoat should add a sound protective layer to a suitable existing surface. If the substrate cannot support that bond, the correct decision may be a different refinishing plan, not another sanding pass.
