Compare Sanding Costs per Finished Square Foot
A cheaper pack can produce a more expensive sanding job. To compare paper sheets, paper discs and net abrasives, divide the cost of completing an accepted sanding stage by the surface area that actually passed inspection. The useful unit is cost per finished square foot, not price per sheet or disc. Here, “finished” means ready for the next specified operation, not already coated.
Net and disc are not competing categories: a disc can have a paper, film or net backing. Write down the exact product and setup behind each price. Mirka's abrasive overview distinguishes backing materials from shapes and shows why the word “disc” alone tells you too little for a fair comparison.
Keep the job constant
Compare methods that can complete the same work to the same standard. A hand block may reach a narrow edge that a random-orbit disc cannot, while a broad panel presents a different balance of sanding time and handling. Separate those operations instead of averaging them into one apparently universal cost.
For a useful trial, keep the material, starting surface, accepted scratch pattern and required shape consistent. Include every grit and corrective pass needed to reach that endpoint. If one method needs another refinement step, its cost belongs in the comparison. If it never produces an acceptable surface, exclude it from the purchasing shortlist.
Machine candidates must fit the sander's diameter, attachment and extraction arrangement. A net abrasive may also require a compatible pad protector. Include the specified accessories; testing an incomplete setup does not establish the value of the abrasive.
Price the pieces you consume
For sheets, calculate the usable pieces your actual block needs. A quarter-sheet calculation is valid only when all four pieces fit and remain usable. If the block's clamps or wrap require a different cut, use that yield instead. Cutting and fitting time also counts.
For example, if a full sheet costs an assumed $1 and gives four usable pieces, each piece costs $0.25. Consuming ten pieces costs $2.50. Do not charge ten whole sheets, or treat the pieces as free because the package was bought earlier. Clean, unused offcuts remain inventory; unusable trim is part of the sheet's cost.

Add working time before choosing a winner
Count sanding, abrasive changes, fitting, necessary cleanup, inspection and correction consistently for each method. Use an hourly labor rate that fits your shop. Count each accepted area once, even if you sanded it again during rework. Include time and abrasive spent on rejected pieces in the numerator, but exclude their area from the accepted-area total.
The calculation is:
Cost per accepted square foot = (consumed abrasive cost + labor cost + other recurring consumables) ÷ accepted area.
The following numbers are invented to show the arithmetic. They are not product prices or measured performance. Each method is assumed to complete the same 20 square feet, with no rejected area, at a labor rate of $30 per hour. Time includes the activities above; no other recurring costs are assumed in this simplified example.

In this example, net costs $1 more in abrasive than paper discs but saves $2 in labor. Its advantage is $1 per 20-square-foot job. Your result may reverse that ranking. Measure equivalent work before ordering enough abrasive to standardize a method.
Separate a lower running cost from a worthwhile conversion
A new sander, extraction accessory or required pad can overwhelm a small recurring saving. Keep those one-time costs separate so you can see whether the expected workload will repay them.
Using the example's $1 saving per job, an assumed $60 conversion cost takes 60 comparable jobs to recover: 1,200 accepted square feet. If you expect only a few such jobs, the method with the lowest running cost may still be the wrong purchase. Replace the assumptions with quotations and observed times, and account for recurring protector or pad replacement where it differs.
Short overview: hand sanding and power sanding
Keep the result attached to its operation: the material, geometry, exact abrasive, setup and acceptance standard. That gives you a purchasing decision you can repeat when prices change, without assuming that the winner on flat panels will also win on edges or profiles.
