Sanding Disc Coming Loose? Find Which Layer Is Separating

When a sanding disc comes loose, look at which layers separated before opening another pack. A worn disc backing, a loose pad saver and a failing backing pad can all look like “the paper won't stick.” They call for different replacement parts.

Stop the sander and disconnect its power source before inspecting the assembly. Do not run it again to watch a loose component come off.

Trace the attachment from the tool outward

The backing pad is the component mounted to the sander. A hook-and-loop disc attaches its loop backing to the pad's hook face. Some systems add a thin pad saver between them, or a softer interface pad for a particular sanding task.

That extra layer creates another connection to inspect. Festool describes its protection pad as a replaceable layer that protects the sanding pad's fastener, particularly with abrasive nets. Its thicker interface accessories serve a different purpose. Use only the arrangement approved for your machine and abrasive.

With the tool disconnected, remove the loose assembly carefully and place the pieces in their installed order. Look at the back of the abrasive as well as the face still on the machine:

Replace or service the specified assembly; another disc will not repair it.

These observations locate the failed interface. They do not establish why it failed.

Compare a used disc with an intact matching disc

For an ordinary hook-and-loop connection, dust, damaged loops, worn hooks and poor positioning can reduce contact. HookandLoop.com's attachment guidance explains these different causes.

Inspect both mating surfaces. Remove loose debris using the cleaning method permitted for the pad. Do not grind the hooks flat with abrasive paper or soak the assembly in an unapproved solvent.

Center an intact, correctly specified disc and press it into full contact while the machine remains disconnected. If that disc attaches evenly but the old one does not, the old disc's backing is suspect. If several intact matching discs fail at the same location, inspect the corresponding pad or saver surface before buying more abrasives.

This is a stationary comparison, not permission to operate with uncertain retention. A damaged pad, torn foam or unsecured attachment needs the correct replacement or service procedure.

Buy the part that the inspection identifies

Record the machine model, pad part number, diameter, fastening type and extraction pattern. A disc with the right diameter can still have the wrong attachment or hole layout. A pressure-sensitive adhesive disc is a different system from a loop-backed disc.

If the failure is in the saver, replace that specified accessory. If the backing pad itself is breaking apart, replace the approved pad assembly. Do not conceal either fault by adding glue or another layer.

After reassembly, check alignment and full attachment according to the machine instructions. If the disc lifts again, stop and resolve the mounting fault. Changing grit will not repair a connection that cannot retain the disc.
