A quieter sanding station starts by identifying the noise source. The sander, extractor, vibrating workpiece, loose accessories, and room reflections can all contribute. Keep dust extraction working while you address noise; turning it off trades one problem for another.
The practical goal is to reduce unnecessary noise without compromising tool cooling, guards, dust capture, or the quality of the work. No abrasive grade makes a powered setup automatically safe for hearing.
Listen to the system in separate stages
With equipment used only in its approved manner, identify whether the dominant sound comes from the extractor, the tool, contact with the work, or an unusual rattle. A sudden change in sound deserves inspection, not acoustic foam placed over it.
Disconnect the relevant equipment before checking loose attachments, damaged pads, obstructed passages, or other service points. Follow the manual, and have faults repaired rather than continuing to use a tool that sounds abnormal.
Record the task and equipment combination when comparing noise. An idle sander in an empty room is not the same condition as sanding a resonant panel with extraction running.

Do not build a tight box around an extractor or cover motor vents with foam or fabric. Enclosures need proper engineering for cooling, service access, dust, and fire considerations. A homemade muffling arrangement can also conceal an equipment fault.
Preserve the dust-control path
A longer, restrictive, or poorly connected hose can change extraction performance. Keep the setup within the manufacturer's approved configuration and check filters, collection capacity, and passages as required. Avoid reducing suction below what the sanding process needs simply to make the machine sound quieter.

Verify the result where people work
Compare the complete station before and after a change under the same task conditions. For occupational exposure decisions, use an appropriate measurement and hearing-conservation process; a casual listening check is not enough. Continue using the hearing protection required for the work while source controls are being improved.
