Using an Infrared Thermometer During Sanding
An infrared thermometer can help you notice a rising surface-temperature trend during sanding. It cannot tell you, by itself, that a coating is safe to keep sanding. The reading depends on the surface, measurement area, instrument settings, and timing as well as the actual heat.
Use it as a repeatable observation tool alongside scratch inspection and the material manufacturer's limits. Do not use a universal temperature from an unrelated project as permission to keep working.
Establish a measurement you can repeat
Choose a representative test area and record its condition before sanding: material, coating, dry or wet state, room conditions, and the abrasive and support you intend to use. Read the thermometer's instructions for emissivity and distance-to-spot ratio.
The laser pointer identifies an aiming location; it is not necessarily the complete measurement footprint. From too far away, the instrument may average the test patch with cooler surroundings. Keep the measuring distance and angle consistent, with the target filling the specified field of view.
Fluke's infrared-thermometer guidance explains how emissivity and target size affect readings. Shiny surfaces are particularly troublesome because reflected infrared energy can influence the result. A low reading on polished metal should not be treated as proof that the part is cool.
A short observation cycle
- Measure the undisturbed test area and note the setup.
- Sand a short, controlled pass using the approved process.
- Stop the tool and measure the same area promptly from the same position.
- Record how long after stopping you took the reading.
- Inspect the abrasive, surface, and scratch pattern before deciding whether to continue.
Measure a few repeatable locations if the work area is large enough: the center, an edge zone, and a nearby comparison area. Use written location names rather than marking a sensitive finish with tape, ink, or adhesive that could create contamination.

This method tracks trends; it is not a validated thermal test. If the actual temperature is important to a process limit, use a measurement method confirmed for that surface, potentially a suitable contact sensor, and follow the equipment instructions.
Respond to heat by checking the process
If the surface warms unexpectedly, stop and review pressure, dwell, abrasive loading, pad condition, and extraction. Continuing with more pressure because an abrasive has slowed down defeats the purpose of monitoring it.
For a coating, verify that it has reached the specified sanding stage. For a plastic, confirm the material and repair method. Softening, smearing, distortion, or other visible damage is a reason to stop even when the thermometer reports an apparently modest number.

What belongs in the job note?
Write the instrument, settings, locations, timing, observed trend, and the action taken. A useful note reads “stopped after the second pass because the surface began smearing; checked cure time,” rather than “temperature looked okay.” The record should explain your decision, not create a false guarantee from one measurement.
