Bonding an Acrylic Edge? Choose the Finish Before You Polish
A clear, glossy edge can be the wrong finish for an acrylic joint. Before polishing a display case, box or stand, identify the edges that will receive adhesive. Those edges need the geometry and preparation required by the bonding method; the exposed edges can follow a separate finishing route.
For a solvent-cemented joint, stop before buffing or flame polishing the mating edge. ACRYLITE's cementing instructions explain two different failures: polishing can round an edge and weaken its fit, while flame-polishing stress can lead to crazing when solvent touches the material.
Assign each edge a job
Use the assembly drawing or a dry layout to distinguish three locations: the edge being bonded, the face it meets, and the exposed perimeter. Mark these on the protective masking, away from the adhesive contact area.
On a simple open-top box, for example, a side panel's bottom edge may be a bonding surface while its top edge remains exposed. Giving both edges the same high-gloss treatment is unnecessary. The bottom needs to mate correctly with the base; the top may need cosmetic finishing and comfortable handling.
Choose the adhesive for the actual acrylic grade before deciding how to prepare the joint. PLEXIGLAS distinguishes light-curing polymerization adhesives from solvent adhesives, with different material and joint applications. Its bonding guidance is a useful example of why “acrylic glue” does not identify one universal preparation method.
Preserve a flat mating edge
Start by fitting the pieces together without adhesive. Look along the seam for gaps, rocking or a chipped corner. Do not squeeze a poor fit closed and count that as accurate preparation.
ACRYLITE calls for clean cutting or machining. Where machining is unavailable, its cementing guide permits wet sanding against a flat surface or block. This is a geometry correction: remove the roughness while keeping the edge square. It is not a progression toward maximum shine.
Hold the support against the full thickness of the edge. A fingertip pressing through loose paper can concentrate removal near one corner. After a short set of strokes, rinse, dry and repeat the fit check. Stop sanding when the rough edge and fit problem are resolved; a frosted appearance alone is not a reason to continue.
For abrasive selection, ACRYLITE's edge-finishing manual describes wet-or-dry paper in the 180–320 range, water and a sanding block. eQualle 320-grit sheets in a 10-pack provide a fine option within that range for an edge that needs only modest correction. The 9 × 11-inch 320-grit sheets can be cut to the block. Deep chips or a badly tilted edge call for correcting the cut, rather than repeatedly rubbing one small area.
Keep display finishing separate
Once the bonding surfaces are prepared, protect them from polishing compound and further abrasion while working on exposed edges. Plan access before assembly: an inside corner may become difficult to reach later, but that does not make polishing a mating surface appropriate.
Flame polishing also adds a fabrication step beyond producing gloss. ACRYLITE warns that the sudden heat induces substantial stress and calls for annealing afterward. Buffing can introduce stress through excessive heat too. If the material supplier's annealing process cannot be followed, choose a supported sanding-and-polishing route for exposed edges instead of improvising torch passes.

This short tip concerns fine scratches on an exposed acrylic surface before polishing. Keep that cosmetic operation separate from joint preparation.
If the edge is already flame polished
Set it aside before applying solvent cement. Ask the sheet or adhesive supplier whether the part can be remachined and stress-relieved for the intended joint. Sanding away the gloss does not, by itself, establish that the internal stress is gone.
The useful final check is the assembly fit: the intended bonding surfaces meet correctly, the exposed edges have their chosen finish, and neither polishing compound nor an accidental rounded corner has entered the joint. Then use the adhesive's specified cleaning, ventilation and cure procedure.
