Dust Nib or Finish Defect? Check Before Spot Sanding
Spot sanding is appropriate only when the defect and coating stage support material removal. A raised dust nib in sound, sufficiently dry film may suit limited intercoat abrasion. A crater is a low spot: sanding its surroundings down to the bottom can remove too much good finish. Soft, wrinkled or repeatedly defective film needs a separate diagnosis.
Before touching the spot, determine whether its center sits above or below the surrounding surface. Then confirm whether you are preparing for another coat or correcting a fully cured final finish; those are different operations.
Read the shape from more than one direction
Let the coating reach its permitted inspection stage. Move a clean light across the surface and view the spot from different directions, using magnification if useful. One bright reflection can make a depression appear raised.
Look at the center and its boundary together. A raised particle may interrupt otherwise continuous film. A crater can have a raised rim around a low center, so feeling an edge is not enough to classify it as a nib. A pinhole or bubble also deserves investigation beyond its apparent size.
The diagram explains the geometry of two idealized cases. It is not a photograph or a test for the cause of a real coating defect. Do not pick the feature with a blade or scratch it with a fingernail to discover its depth; that can break a thin film and change the problem.
Confirm the correction stage with the exact coating
Intercoat abrasion prepares a dry layer for another coat. Final rubbing or polishing changes the finished surface and may require different curing, abrasive and cleanup instructions. A coating that is dry enough to handle is not automatically ready for either process.
In General Finishes' hand-applied water-based topcoat example, the manufacturer describes light sanding after drying and removing the resulting powder before the next coat. It specifies a 220 sanding pad for that demonstration. Do not silently turn that into a 320-grit prescription or a procedure for every clear coat.
For your product, identify the permitted correction stage, abrasive, wet-or-dry method and cleanup. If a light permitted trial gums up, rolls the film or drags the surface, stop. Extra pressure or coarser paper does not resolve an unsuitable coating stage.
A widening matte ring is a reason to stop
Consider an illustrative coated sample with a tiny circular defect. The coating has reached its permitted correction stage, but a short trial makes a matte ring around the spot while its low center remains. Continuing would remove the sound surrounding film without filling the center.
Stop the spot-sanding approach and use the finish system's defect-repair process. That may involve correcting contamination or application conditions and recoating, rather than making the local sanding patch larger. The unchanged low center is the observation that changes the decision.
For contrast, if an identified raised nib is reduced by the permitted light trial and the surrounding film stays intact, limited correction may be working. Clean and inspect before another pass. Do not keep rubbing merely to make an intercoat matte area match the final sheen.
These are teaching cases, not results from an eQualle coating test. A real defect still needs identification against the actual product and film condition.
Control where the abrasive bears
Try the support and abrasive on a separate coated sample before a visible repair. The support should remain stable on the intended surface; a tiny piece pinched under a fingertip can press beside the nib, and a rocking block can cut a wider path than expected.
Keep away from edges, molded corners and areas already thin from previous correction. A smaller contact is useful only when you can control it. If the support cannot sit predictably, change the setup or repair scope before touching the visible surface.
Where your actual coating process specifies this grade, 320-grit sheets in a 10-pack can supply cut pieces for supported hand work. This is a separate conditional product option; it does not replace the abrasive specified in the cited General Finishes example.

Use an observable endpoint
For an approved intercoat nib correction, the endpoint is removal of the protrusion with surrounding film left suitable for the next coat. A small change in sheen can be expected from abrasion and is not a reason to polish prematurely.
Stop if substrate appears, the center changes color unexpectedly, a low center remains while the worked area grows, or the coating becomes gummy. These observations do not all have the same cause; they all mean the current spot-removal approach needs reassessment.
For many repeated specks, inspect applicators, loose fibers and dust sources before correcting every mark. Keep finishing work away from active sanding and use the product's required cleaning and application procedure. Otherwise the next coat may reproduce the condition you just corrected.
After the complete repair and required drying or curing, compare the area with the surrounding finish under normal viewing light as well as inspection light. The result should have the intended texture and sheen without a conspicuous repair boundary. Keep the product, stage and successful method with your sample so a future defect is diagnosed rather than automatically sanded.
