Sanding Block vs Sponge: Choose What Should Stay Flat
A sanding block and a sanding sponge can carry similarly graded abrasives yet produce different shapes. Choose a firm, flat support when you need to preserve a plane; choose a conformable support when you need to follow an existing contour. Then choose the abrasive grade for the material and the next finish step.
The useful question is not which tool is universally better. It is what shape you need to keep while removing the scratches or surface roughness.

These are support choices, not universal grit recommendations. A coarse sponge can remove detail quickly. A fine sheet on a firm block can still cut through a thin coating if you dwell in one place.
What the block contributes
A block spreads your grip over a defined working face. The sheet should lie smooth and remain secure; a loose fold can create a pressure ridge or slip during a stroke. Check the block itself for embedded particles and damaged corners before fitting fresh paper.
A firm support is useful when the defect and the surrounding surface need to be treated as one plane. Work over the area with controlled, overlapping movement. Inspect the result after a short pass rather than continuing until it merely feels smoother.
The block's length matters as well as its firmness. A small hand block is convenient for a cabinet rail, but it is not a reference straightedge for a tabletop. When substantial flattening is required, establish an appropriate leveling method before doing finish sanding.
What the sponge contributes
A sponge can conform to modest changes in curvature. That makes it useful for scuffing an already shaped molding, where the goal is surface preparation rather than reshaping. It also means the sponge can compress around an edge you intended to keep sharp.
Do not squeeze a sponge into a recess until your fingertips become the effective sanding tool. Select a size and shape that reaches the intended surface with light, controlled contact. On a complex profile, divide the work into individual faces and curves rather than rubbing across everything at once.
Mirka's interface-pad description illustrates the same principle of added compliance for rounded surfaces. A machine interface is a different accessory from a handheld abrasive sponge, so its operating instructions are not interchangeable.
Try the support before committing to the part
Use scrap with the same shape when possible. Fit the intended abrasive, make a brief pass, then inspect both the scratch coverage and the edge shape. A missed recess calls for a better-fitting support. A newly rounded corner calls for less edge contact or firmer registration, not simply a finer grit.

Can a soft block replace a sponge?
Sometimes, but judge the actual support rather than its name. Rubber blocks, cork blocks, foam pads, and abrasive sponges vary in stiffness and shape. The right choice is the one that contacts the intended area while preserving the geometry you need.
