Curled Sandpaper: Check the Backing Before You Use It
A curled sheet is not automatically worn out, and pressing it flat does not prove that it is sound. Check the backing and abrasive surface before deciding whether it belongs on your hand block. Shape, damage and poor cutting are different problems.
This check is for loose hand-sanding sheets. Powered discs and belts have their own mounting and storage requirements; a sheet inspection does not approve them for use.
Why a sheet changes shape
The backing and the abrasive bond do not respond to moisture in exactly the same way. If they expand or contract differently, the sheet can bow. That can happen to unused paper as conditions change between storage and the bench.
Klingspor's handling and storage guidance describes this response in coated abrasives and notes that humid conditions can promote creasing, while low humidity can reduce flexibility. A bend alone therefore tells you little about how much cutting life remains. It also cannot identify the abrasive grade.
Inspect before trying to flatten it
Lay the sheet on a clean surface and look at both sides. A smooth curve is different from a sharp crease with a split backing. Check the edges, especially where the sheet will be gripped or folded around a block.
Then examine the working face. Bare patches, lifting abrasive or an obvious change in the coating deserve closer attention. Do not brush or scrape a questionable sheet aggressively just to make it look clean. If the backing is cracked, the coating is separating, or ordinary handling releases loose abrasive, replace the sheet.
For an otherwise intact sheet, fit it to the intended block using the normal attachment method. It should stay secure and present an even working face. A wrinkle or raised fold under the sanding area can concentrate contact and mark the work. If you cannot obtain reliable contact without forcing the sheet, choose another piece.
Do not iron, heat or soak a curled sheet as a general repair. Even a product rated for wet sanding is not thereby approved for an improvised storage-reconditioning method.
Use a fresh sheet to answer a different question
Once an intact sheet fits properly, a short trial on suitable scrap can reveal whether it still cuts as expected. Compare the same product and grade, on comparable material, with the same support. A used or contaminated sheet can perform poorly even after its curl disappears.
For a finishing operation that specifies 220 grit, eQualle 220-grit sheets in a 10-sheet pack provide a fresh reference without buying a large pack. Keep the reference sheet labeled so a later comparison does not accidentally mix grades.
If fresh paper behaves poorly too, investigate the workpiece and method instead of blaming storage. For deciding when slow cutting warrants replacement, the cut-life log separates abrasive cost from the extra time spent using an exhausted piece.
Correct the storage problem
Return unused sheets to their original packaging and keep them in a stable indoor location, away from damp floors, windows and direct heat. Avoid moving an opened pack repeatedly between a cold vehicle and a heated work area. Keep clean sheets separate from wet, dusty or used pieces.
A newly flattened pack is not proof that the storage conditions are suitable. Check whether the problem returns, whether other packs in the same location are affected, and whether the backing remains sound. Replace damaged stock; change the storage location before opening its replacement.
