Should You Sand Between Gel Stain Coats? When 320 Grit Fits

Quick answer: Do not automatically sand every gel stain color coat. Some finish systems allow a very light scuff after the stain is fully dry; others tell you to leave the color layer alone and sand only a cured sealer or topcoat. Read the exact product instructions first. When sanding is permitted, 320 grit can de-nib the surface with minimal cutting if you use very light pressure and stay away from edges.

  • the coat is fully dry and sands to a clean powder instead of smearing;
  • the purpose is de-nibbing, not removing or leveling color;
  • the surface is flat enough to support the abrasive evenly;
  • you can test an inconspicuous area first;
  • the next coat is compatible with the cleaned surface.

Use the minimum number of passes. The objective is to remove dust nibs or a small high point, not to turn the entire color coat uniformly dull.

A 320 grit 10-pack suits a small furniture or sample-board project. A 320 grit 25-pack is more practical for cabinet doors, multiple pieces, or repeated finishing work.

When not to sand the gel stain

Do not sand merely because another stain or topcoat system recommends it. Stop when:

  • the label says to apply the next coat without sanding;
  • the stain is still tacky, soft, or gummy;
  • color transfers heavily to the paper;
  • edges or profiles are already lighter than the flat areas;
  • the color is intentionally glazed or layered for effect;
  • you cannot reproduce the finish on a test board.

Gel stain provides color. Gel topcoat or another clear finish protects the color and builds a film. A manufacturer may direct you to sand a dried topcoat between clear coats even when it does not want the stain color coat sanded.

When the color is sealed under a cured clear layer, light sanding can remove dust nibs with less risk of changing the color. You can still cut through the clear at edges, so pressure control matters.
