Wet Sponge vs Dry Sanding Drywall: Choose by the Defect
Choose between a damp sponge and dry sanding drywall by looking at the defect, not just the amount of dust you want to avoid. A small area of joint compound needing minimal smoothing may suit damp sponging. Local high spots can call for a supported dry abrasive. A hollow needs more compound; neither method can fill it.
Here, “wet sponge” means smoothing suitable joint compound with a damp finishing sponge. It does not mean flooding the wall or wet-sanding it like an automotive clear coat.

This is a selection guide, not a measured speed or dust comparison. The compound, surface condition and tool setup can change which method is practical.
What the sponge does well
USG's installation and finishing guide places wet sponging in the case where only minimal sanding is needed. It specifies a suitable small-celled sponge, wrung to prevent drips, frequent cleaning and as few strokes as practical. Its dry-sanding instructions also emphasize protecting the panel paper. Start on a small area that your compound's instructions allow you to sponge. Work gently, rinse the sponge as it loads, and stop to inspect instead of repeatedly scrubbing the same spot. If the compound begins to smear or pull away, stop working it. Let the area reach the condition required for the next operation before deciding whether it needs another coat.
A damp surface can temporarily make a transition look less obvious. Judge the repair again after it dries, under the light the wall will actually receive. Damp sponging can reduce airborne dust during this step, but it is not a promise that the whole repair process creates no dust or residue.
Where dry mesh and paper differ
Dry sanding removes material mechanically. Support and pressure matter whether the abrasive is paper or mesh. A finger pressing directly through a small piece can concentrate removal, so use a suitable flat holder for a flat patch.
Mesh has openings through its abrasive surface. Mirka explains that its Abranet mesh allows dust extraction across the sanding area when used in the appropriate setup. The tool, pad and extractor must still be compatible. See Mirka's wall and ceiling preparation guidance.
Solid waterproof paper is a different format. The waterproof backing does not make it an open-mesh extraction abrasive, and it does not make every wall surface suitable for wet sanding. For a local hand-sanded patch, sheets may be useful without implying that they replace a mesh system across an entire room.
For dry hand finishing, choose the grit specified for the compound and its condition. USG's guide lists 150- or 220-grit paper among its finishing supplies. eQualle 150-grit sheets, 50-pack, and 220-grit sheets, 50-pack, are options for repeated repair work; the pack size is not a per-patch consumption estimate. Browse the 150-grit or 220-grit collections if a different quantity suits the job.
The 150-grit guide provides general abrasive context. For this wall, use the joint-compound instructions rather than a wood-finishing or polishing sequence.
A raised patch is not always a sanding problem
Imagine a patch with a smooth center but a visible ridge at its perimeter. Before sanding the entire patch, check the transition with a straightedge and side lighting. You may need to feather the repair farther out rather than remove its middle. USG describes feathering a crowned joint more broadly instead of treating the crown as a reason for unlimited sanding.
Likewise, a small dark line under the straightedge can indicate a low spot. Scrubbing it with a sponge or changing from paper to mesh will not add the missing compound. Correct the shape first, then choose a finishing method for the smaller remaining defects.
Decide whether it is ready for primer
Remove residue using the product's recommended cleanup method. Confirm that the repair is dry enough for the selected primer, the transition is satisfactory, and the paper and tape remain intact. Inspect from the room's normal viewing position as well as close up.
Do not rely on a universal “wait 24 hours” rule: temperature, humidity, coat thickness and compound type affect readiness. Prime according to the coating instructions, then reassess the appearance before committing to the finish coat. If a ridge remains visible, more paint is not a substitute for correcting the surface.
