Alcohol-Ink Epoxy: Sand the Surface Without Chasing Color Into the Slurry
Alcohol ink can sit at different depths in an epoxy casting. It may be fully encapsulated below clear resin, concentrated at the surface, or trapped in an incompletely cured layer. When wet sanding produces colored slurry, that color alone does not prove the artwork is bleeding. It may be pigment from a surface-rich layer—or simply fine colored resin particles created by abrasion.
The safe decision comes from cure evidence and a controlled white-pad test, not from chasing clear rinse water.
Confirm the exact resin is fully cured
Use the resin manufacturer's batch ratio, cure schedule and sanding guidance. Record pour time, room temperature, pigment and any topcoat. If the surface dents, smells strongly, feels greasy or loads the abrasive into soft rolls, stop. More time may be required, or the mix may not have cured correctly.
Some epoxies develop a surface film that must be washed before sanding. WEST SYSTEM's amine-blush guidance directs washing cured epoxy with water and an abrasive pad before sanding when blush may be present. Apply that only to the product system it covers; follow your resin maker's method.
Do not add solvent to the wet-sanding water. It can attack resin, carry color and create a finish-compatibility problem.
Map how close the color is to the surface
Choose a low edge or test coupon poured from the same batch. Under oblique light, mark the highest defect and estimate how much clear resin lies above the color. If a ridge or bubble is deeper than the clear cap, sanding it flat will necessarily enter the artwork. Recoat or recast rather than pretending abrasion can preserve a layer that is not there.
Wipe the dry test zone with a clean white pad using only the maker-approved cleaner. Color transfer before sanding suggests exposed or mobile material. Stop and ask the ink and resin suppliers about compatibility.
Read the wet-sanding slurry correctly
When the manufacturer permits wet sanding and 1500 grit suits the existing scratch depth, these 1500-grit sheets are one concrete option. A deep high spot may require a coarser, fully documented sequence; 1500 grit should not be used to disguise bad geometry through hours of rubbing.
Use fresh water, a clean small block and a bounded test area. Make five light passes, rinse the surface and transfer one drop of slurry to a white card. Then rinse again and wipe the resin itself with a second clean white pad.
Colored slurry with a clean final wipe can be ordinary abraded colored resin. Continuing color on the clean surface wipe, a changing artwork boundary or a new transparent spot indicates that the color layer is exposed or moving. Stop immediately.
Keep the scratch field uniform
Sand beyond the high point with a flat support so the defect does not become a dish. Change direction between approved grades and remove every earlier scratch before advancing. Dry the surface completely for inspection; water temporarily hides scratches.
Keep a separate clean-water container for each colored project so transferred pigment cannot contaminate another piece. Wear the protective equipment required by the resin and abrasive process, and collect slurry rather than washing uncured or pigment-rich waste into a drain.
Decide whether to polish or recoat
After the final allowed sanding stage, choose one clarity route from the resin system. Polishing requires enough cured resin above the art to remove the remaining scratch pattern. Recoating requires the surface texture, cleaning and recoat window specified by the manufacturer. Combining half of each process can trap contamination beneath a glossy coat.
On the test coupon, polish one section and recoat another only if both routes are permitted. Compare depth, color saturation, edge buildup and visibility of the transition. A recoat that looks clear while wet may reveal fisheyes or a boundary after cure; a polished area may heat or expose color if too little cap remains.
Select the route that preserves the artwork with the fewest unsupported steps. Record compound, pad, speed or coating film build. “More gloss” is not automatically better if the process changes the ink boundary or leaves an obvious repair island.
Finish only after the color remains stable
Let the test dry and rest. Inspect it under front light, backlight if the casting is translucent, and the normal display light. The shape should remain clear, the color boundary should not creep and the haze should be uniform enough for the next approved grade or topcoat.
Complete a small polish or recoating trial using the resin system's instructions. If the trial restores clarity without revealing a pale island, the sequence can expand. Record the grade, water, number of passes and white-pad results. That record prevents a harmless colored slurry from causing panic—and prevents genuine surface color loss from being polished into permanence.
