French Polish Between Sessions: Level Dust Without Leaving Witness Lines
French polishing builds a shellac film through many light applications. That does not mean every session should end with sandpaper. A surface that feels slightly grabby may need more drying time or a change in the rubber, while a hard dust nib may justify a tiny leveling step. Treating both conditions alike can produce pale witness lines, cut through color, or leave a patch that accepts the next session differently.
Before touching the film, decide whether the defect is above it, within it or caused by the next application technique.
Read the defect in reflected light
Allow the piece to rest for the period required by the shellac and French-polish schedule you are following. “Dry to the touch” is not proof that a built film is ready to abrade. Temperature, humidity, cut, solvent, oil use and the thickness accumulated in earlier sessions all affect the response.
Move one broad light across the surface and inspect from two directions. A few bright points that stay fixed as the reflection moves are likely raised nibs. Long dull tracks in the path of the rubber suggest drag or an uneven session. A cloudy patch, soft fingerprint or balling under gentle contact signals that the film is not ready for sanding.
Mark the defect on a photograph. Do not circle it directly on the finish. Then clean the room and the rubber before resuming work; a recurring nib can be a contamination problem, not a leveling problem.
Try the least destructive correction first
For drag or a dry-looking session, follow the established French-polish method for adjusting the rubber, alcohol charge or spiriting-off step. Adding oil, alcohol or shellac by guesswork can make the diagnosis worse, so keep the recipe and technique consistent with the system already on the piece.
For one isolated hard nib, a sharp leveling tool used by an experienced finisher may remove the projection without thinning the surrounding film. For scattered nibs or a slight ridge, test micro-sanding in a hidden area. A test is especially important on dyed wood, toned shellac or any finish where color lies close to the surface.
Build a controlled micro-leveling test
Use a small, dead-flat support whose edges have been eased so they cannot score the film. Lubricate only if the shellac schedule explicitly permits it; water, mineral spirits and oil are not interchangeable on an unknown or partially cured finish.
When a verified schedule calls for an ultra-fine sheet, 1500-grit wet-or-dry paper is one available option. Its presence here is not a universal French-polish prescription. Start with the least aggressive grade that actually removes the raised defect in your approved test.
Make two or three short, light passes across an area larger than the nib but smaller than the final viewing field. Clean by the method allowed in the finish schedule and inspect completely dry. The patch should show an even, shallow haze with no bright low ring around the defect. A bright ring means the center was cut while the surrounding low area remained untouched—the beginning of a witness line.
Stop before color or pore pattern changes
Check the abrasive and wipe material under neutral light. Brown or amber dust can simply be shellac, but a sudden strong color change may mean the toned layer is being removed. Stop if the wood pores become sharply outlined, the patch turns paler, the film warms under the fingers, or residue begins to roll into soft crumbs.
Do not enlarge a failed test to blend it. Let the surface rest, reassess the finish schedule and decide whether the area needs more shellac, localized color repair or removal by a specialist. On a valuable instrument or antique, witness-line and color repair are conservation decisions, not routine sanding.
Prevent the next session from recreating the defect
Before returning to the whole panel, audit the conditions that produced the nib or drag. Strain fresh shellac if the recipe calls for it, replace a shedding cover on the rubber, clean the work support and move airborne dust work out of the room. Check that the rubber leaves a continuous evaporating trail rather than a wet stop mark.
Practice the entry and exit on a sample panel. Bring the rubber into contact while moving, keep its path beyond the micro-leveled boundary and lift while still moving. Parking at either end can deposit a heavier oval that later reads as another witness line. If the surface begins to grab, stop the session and diagnose charge, lubrication and drying conditions instead of forcing the rubber across the film.
Keep the accepted test under the same lamp through the next two sessions. A defect that disappears when wet but returns after solvent leaves has not been leveled; it has only been optically hidden for a few minutes.
Resume polishing from a proven surface
A successful test is flat enough that the nib no longer interrupts the moving reflection, yet it has not created a visible island. Remove every abrasive particle, allow any permitted lubricant to clear, and resume with a lightly charged rubber according to the chosen method. The first pass should travel beyond the test boundary rather than stopping on it.
Inspect after the next short session. If the patch disappears in reflected and normal light, the process is sound. If it telegraphs as a ring, do not keep padding the same route and hope it vanishes. Revisit the leveling boundary and film build. In French polishing, the controlled decision to wait is often more valuable than another abrasive pass.
