Chevron Parquet: Protect the Apex Instead of Following One Grain Direction
Chevron parquet has no single “with the grain” direction. Each row meets its neighbor at an apex, and the point can be thin, proud or poorly supported. A machine path that looks correct for one piece crosses the adjacent piece. Trying to solve that conflict with hand pressure at every point can dish the soft board and blunt the pattern.
The job begins with layout and flatness. Abrasive direction is only one part of the plan.
Decide whether this is a full-floor or local repair
Map the species, board thickness, wear layer, adhesive system, finish and previous sanding history. Engineered parquet may have little wear layer remaining. Loose pieces, hollow sounds, moisture imbalance and moving apexes require repair before sanding.
Use a long straightedge and low-angle light to mark broad high areas, individual proud points and low valleys. Do not let the brightest scratch determine the whole cut. A local ridge at one apex is different from a floor-wide wave.
For a full resand, use a qualified floor professional and the equipment sequence specified for patterned floors. The National Wood Flooring Association technical-guidelines index identifies dedicated sand-and-finish and ornamental-floor guidance; it does not reduce chevron to one universal grit or travel direction.
Protect the apex before the first pass
Photograph the pattern and mark several reference points outside the sanding field. Check whether the apex is tight, supported and flush. A loose point can catch an abrasive and fracture.
For a local hand correction, make a thin template of the neighboring edges and mark a no-cut boundary over the low board. Use a hard, flat block that spans the high area without tipping onto the point. Flexible finger sanding follows the valley and erases the crisp geometry.

Use a scratch plan that acknowledges both grains
Make a few light strokes on the documented high area and clean it. Inspect from both board directions. If the scratch is obvious on one piece but not the other, rotate the final hand pass for each board rather than dragging one long stroke across the junction.
Do not pivot the block on the apex. Lift, reposition and start the neighboring piece separately. Keep a count of passes only as a consistency aid; the straightedge and witness marks determine when the high spot is removed.
Read the floor dry between stages
Vacuum with equipment appropriate to wood dust and wipe only as the finish system permits. Water or solvent can temporarily change grain and hide scratches. Inspect the dry area under raking light from four directions.
A pale triangle at the point can mean fresh wood, a thinner finish or cross-grain scratches; do not automatically enlarge it. Recheck thickness and the straightedge. Stop if the point becomes shorter, the joint opens, adhesive appears or the block contacts only the apex.
Manage room edges without creating a border trench
At walls and thresholds, the large machine's cut changes and hand or edging tools take over. Mark the planned overlap before starting. If the edge zone is worked independently until its scratches vanish, it can become lower than the field and frame the room with a visible trough.
Use the longest support that fits the border and compare it frequently with a straightedge reaching into the main field. At a chevron point close to a wall, work each board direction separately and lift at the apex. Protect metal transitions and stone rather than using them as guides for the abrasive.
Complete a dry inspection after dust removal. The edge-to-field reflection should flow continuously, and the last apex should retain the same length as those in the open floor. If it does not, determine whether the issue is cut depth or scratch direction before taking another pass.
Prove the finish on a complete junction
Prepare a small test that crosses both board directions and one intact apex. Apply the exact stain and finish schedule. The trial passes when color remains balanced across both grains, the point stays crisp and scratches do not flare as the viewer moves.
Record the abrasive, machine or block path, light direction and final measurements. A good chevron repair does not make every piece react identically; it lets the pattern remain deliberate. The apex should read as the meeting of two boards, not as a rounded spot created while trying to obey a grain rule that cannot fit both.
Save several reference photographs after cure. Future maintenance can then distinguish normal finish wear from a new geometry change at the same points.
