Inset Cabinet Door Rubs: Check the Fit Before Sanding

If an inset cabinet door rubs, check the hinges, the opening, and the point of contact before sanding its edge. Sanding makes sense only for a small, stable clearance problem in material you can safely remove and refinish. It cannot correct a loose hinge, a swollen door, or contact caused by the door's path through the opening.

Start with the door installed. You need to see how it sits and moves before taking away the evidence by removing wood.

Locate the rub before choosing a repair

Close the door gently, then open it slowly. Watch all four gaps and note when contact begins. A mark on the lower corner means something different from a long rub beside a hinge. Use existing polished areas or transferred finish as clues; do not force the door shut to make a stronger mark.

A sagging free corner

A low free corner and sloping top gap can point to hinge attachment or door position.

Check for movement at the mounting plate. Repair loose hardware before deciding whether the door needs sizing.

Contact during the opening swing

A door may clear the frame when closed but touch as it opens. The closed-position gap does not establish swing clearance.

Check hinge geometry, depth and the complete opening path before removing material.

Rubbing after moisture exposure

An edge that started rubbing after a leak or humid period may reflect swelling or joint movement.

Identify the moisture source and assess the joints. Let temporary movement stabilize before reducing the door.

A localized paint ridge

The door remains aligned, but coating buildup rubs at one identifiable point.

Confirm the exact contact. The correction may involve the coating alone rather than resizing the door.

These patterns narrow the inspection; none identifies the cause by itself. Photograph the closed position and the first contact point so you can compare them after each change.

A low corner that does not need sanding

Consider this illustrative case: the lower free corner catches the frame, and the top gap widens toward that corner. With the door supported, you find movement at the upper hinge's mounting plate. After correcting the attachment using the hinge instructions, the door sits squarely and opens without touching.

The correct decision in that case is to stop removing material before starting: the clearance returned through hardware repair. Sanding the low corner first would have left unnecessary space once the door was realigned.

If the same corner still catches after attachment is sound, the first explanation was incomplete. Recheck the whole swing and the opening. Do not treat an unsuccessful hinge repair as automatic permission to sand.

Adjust the identified hinge, one change at a time

Find the hinge model or the cabinet maker's hardware information. Blum's CLIP top adjustment page describes side, height and depth adjustment for that system. It is a useful example of why the screw's function matters; it is not a screw map for every concealed hinge.

Support the door as its instructions require. Record the starting position, change one adjustment, and close gently. Check the opposite edge too. Moving the door away from one side can use up clearance on the other.

A stripped screw hole, bent hinge or shifting mounting plate needs a sound repair. Tightening harder or sanding a hinge component does not restore the intended attachment. Stop adjustment if the door cannot remain securely supported.

Check whether the door or opening has changed

A door that fitted yesterday deserves a different investigation from one that has rubbed since installation. Look for recent painting, water exposure, loose cabinet joints or movement of the cabinet itself. Check whether the door lies in one plane and whether a joint has opened.

Use the cabinet maker's reveal and clearance specification where available. A neighboring door can reveal a change in alignment, but its gap is not necessarily your design dimension. There is no single clearance number that accounts for every inset construction, coating and hinge.

If swelling is visible or conditions are still changing, resolve that first. Removing a swollen edge can create a permanent oversized gap after the wood returns toward its previous dimensions.

When a small sanding correction is justified

Proceed only when hardware is stable, contact is repeatable, and the edge construction is known. A solid wood edge, thin applied edging and a veneered face permit different amounts of correction. A face that looks like wood does not prove there is solid wood underneath the rubbed area.

For a minor correction that permits hand sanding:

  1. Mark the location in a way that will not stain or damage the finish, or keep a photograph beside the bench.
  2. Remove and support the door according to its hardware instructions. Protect its face and identify any old coating before making dust.
  3. Fit the abrasive to a firm support that stays on the intended edge. Keep it off the adjacent face.
  4. Make a short correction, clean the edge, and refit to check the complete swing.

For an approved bare-wood step specifying this grade, 180-grit sheets in a 25-pack can be cut to the support. They do not establish how much edge material may safely be removed. Our hand-sanding block setup guide explains work holding and grip when a narrow edge is difficult to control.

Stop if a different layer appears, a joint moves, the edge starts rounding, or contact persists somewhere other than the corrected spot. A substantial sizing error calls for a controlled trimming and refinishing plan.

Judge the fit after restoring the finish

Restore the specified protection on any exposed edge and let the coating reach its required service condition. Finish adds thickness, so bare wood that barely clears is not the final test.

The repair passes when the refinished door moves through its full swing without contact, rests correctly when closed, and operates its latch or soft-close mechanism without being forced. Record the adjustment or correction that achieved that result. A smooth edge alone is not evidence that the fit is fixed.
