Paper or Cloth Abrasive for Curves: Choose the Support
Choose paper or cloth abrasive for a curved part by testing whether the complete setup reaches the intended surface without changing its profile. Cloth can resist tearing, but it can still cut a groove or round a shoulder. Paper can work well when its flexibility and support suit the curve.
If both candidates miss the bottom of a cove, change the support before buying a stronger strip. Backing strength and correct contact are separate decisions.
What the backing tells you—and what it does not
Paper and cloth each cover a range of constructions. Lightweight paper can bend differently from heavy paper; a flexible cloth product can behave differently from a stiff cloth belt. That helps you choose candidates, but it does not establish their cutting behavior on your part. Grain, grade, coating, wear and support also affect the result. Cloth is not automatically waterproof: verify the complete product's wet-use rating before introducing water.
Keep this comparison to stationary hand work. Do not loop a strip around a rotating spindle or use a loose hand strip where machinery could catch it.
Match the contact to the curve
Broad convex curve
The abrasive needs controlled support that follows the curve. A taut strip can concentrate work in a narrow band.
Trial the supported setup and inspect whether the scratch spreads evenly across the intended area.
Concave cove
A flat or oversized support can bridge the hollow and cut the shoulders while leaving the bottom untouched.
Use a support shaped to reach the intended hollow, then check where the abrasive actually contacts it.

Keep the contact small and controllable so it stays on the bead. Inspect the shoulder before continuing.
Nearly flat section between curves
A soft support can follow hollows or round the section boundaries.
Trial firm support that registers on that section and check that the surrounding curves remain intact.
Place the fitted abrasive against the profile before making a stroke. Look from the end where possible. If the paper must buckle or the cloth must stretch around a corner to reach the surface, the support has not solved the contact problem.
A cove comparison that isolates the useful change
Imagine two matching molding offcuts with a shallow cove. This is a teaching example, not a measured product test. A paper strip and a cloth strip are each fitted over the same flat support. After short trials, both leave fresh scratches on the shoulders while the bottom remains untouched.
The useful conclusion is that both setups bridge the hollow. The intact cloth is not the winner merely because the paper has started to crease. Fit a support that matches the cove, account for the abrasive's thickness, and repeat on fresh matching areas.
Suppose the revised paper setup now reaches the bottom without cutting the shoulders. That result supports using that setup for the task; it does not prove paper is universally better. If the cloth setup also preserves the profile and is easier to control, handling and durability can decide between them.
Keep the comparison fair enough to interpret
Use the same material and profile, comparable fresh abrasive grades, and the same intended working direction. Match mineral and grading system where practical. If you change mineral, grade and backing together, describe the result as a comparison of complete products, not a backing-only experiment.
Label the samples before starting. Keep the untouched profile beside them as a reference. Use short, similar trials rather than continuing with one candidate until it looks better. Clean away dust before comparing scratch coverage and the shape of the detail.
Check three things in order: did the abrasive reach the target, did it preserve the neighboring profile, and did it leave a scratch field suitable for the next finishing step? A faster cut is useful only after those requirements are met.
Do not infer equal pressure from equal effort. A narrow crease can concentrate the same hand force into much less contact area. If one strip bunches, fix the fit and restart the comparison rather than pressing through the fold.
Read the strip as well as the wood
A repeated tear at a support corner suggests a fit or handling problem. A broad worn area shows where contact has occurred, but does not measure how much wood was removed. A strip that stays intact while carving a narrow track has failed the shape-preservation test.

If both products load rapidly across a coated surface, establish whether the coating is ready for abrasion. Changing to cloth cannot make soft finish hard. If both leave isolated deep scratches, inspect the support and work area for trapped particles.
Choose the format after the trial
Sheets are convenient when several small supports need separate pieces. For a permitted wood-preparation step calling for this grade, 180-grit paper sheets, 25 per pack supply cuttable paper pieces. They are a paper option, not a substitute specification for a cloth product.
Record the product, support shape, strip width and working direction that preserved the sample. Keep used and unused pieces separate. Reproducing those details is more reliable than remembering only that a particular backing felt strong.
The setup passes when it reaches the intended surface and leaves the original shoulders and neighboring detail intact under the same inspection light. If neither candidate can do that, change the access or support strategy. Do not keep sanding the surrounding shape away to reach a recessed spot.
