T1-11 Siding Grooves: Prep a Shed Without Rounding the Ridges

T1-11 siding looks like one surface from a distance, but it presents at least three different sanding problems: broad faces, narrow groove bottoms and thin shoulders between them. Running the same flexible sheet across all three can soften the pattern, cut through a face veneer and still leave failed paint in the recesses.

Good preparation keeps the manufactured profile readable. It removes loose coating and sharp fibers without trying to make the grooves as smooth as cabinet work.

Identify the panel and the failure first

Confirm whether the siding is plywood or an engineered panel, how thick the outer face is, and whether the groove exposes a different layer. Look at an offcut, protected lower edge or manufacturer stamp when available. Do not assume every grooved shed panel is the same product.

Probe swollen edges and dark areas gently. Soft veneer, delamination, deep checking, failed flashing and water entering behind the panel are repair problems. Sanding a dry-looking face will not correct a leaking roof edge or a lower panel installed too close to wet ground.

Identify old coatings before disturbing them. If the paint may contain lead or another hazardous component, use the required containment and certified process. Pressure washing, aggressive scraping and dry power sanding can all spread damage or contamination when used without a plan.

Divide the profile into working zones

Mark one representative section on a photograph:

  • Flats: the broad face veneer between grooves.
  • Shoulders: the narrow ridge edges that create the visual pattern.
  • Groove bottoms: recessed areas where paint can bridge or collect.
  • Damage zones: checks, exposed veneer, fastener heads and repairs.

Clean first using the paint maker's approved method and allow the panel to reach its required moisture condition. Scrape only loose paint with a tool whose corners cannot dig into the shoulder. A narrow brush or shaped scraper often removes failed material from a groove more accurately than sandpaper.

Support the abrasive to fit each zone

Follow the coating manufacturer's preparation range. If it permits a 220-grit final scuff on sound existing paint, a 25-sheet pack of 220 grit is one practical source for a larger shed. It is not the right starting grade for every failed coating or raw panel.

Use a firm flat block on the flats. Stop it short of the groove shoulder instead of rocking over the ridge. For a groove bottom, wrap a narrow strip around a shaped support that contacts the bottom without bearing on both shoulders. Test the support without abrasive first; if it burnishes the ridge edges, it is too wide.

Make short strokes along the profile. Clean the surface and inspect after a few passes. A successful test removes gloss or a feathered paint edge while the shoulder keeps the same shadow line. Stop if the face ply pattern becomes more prominent, fibers lift in ribbons, or the groove appears wider.

A general detail-sanding example. T1-11 still requires a support sized to its groove and protection for its thin ridge shoulders.

Feather damage without chasing every texture

Sound factory texture and weathered grain do not need to disappear. Feather a stable paint edge only far enough that the specified primer can bridge it. Where bare wood is exposed, follow the coating system's spot-priming instructions rather than sanding the surrounding paint to match its color.

At a check, remove only loose edges and confirm that the opening is stable. Do not fill a drainage path or force a rigid patch across moving plywood layers. At fasteners, address corrosion and movement before surface appearance.

Vacuum from the top down using equipment suited to the coating and dust. Brush the grooves and inspect them again in side light; packed dust can make a recess look smooth until the first coat pulls it into a ridge.

Stage one complete panel before committing the shed

Choose a panel that includes sun exposure, a sheltered groove and one repaired edge. Prepare only that panel and record the tools used in each zone. Apply the full primer and first-coat method, including back-brushing or spray-plus-back-brush steps if the coating maker requires them.

Inspect after the specified dry time from across the yard and at arm's length. A groove that looked clean while bare may show a thick paint rope; a rounded shoulder may appear as a wider stripe. Those are process signals. Adjust application, scraper width or support shape on the trial panel rather than sanding every groove wider.

Check the bottom edge and vertical joints after a wetting event. New swelling, open plywood layers or paint bubbles indicate a moisture or edge-sealing problem. Correct that cause before duplicating the preparation across the building. One finished panel provides more useful evidence than a shed full of uniformly abraded but untested siding.

Approve the profile before painting

Set a straightedge or simple profile template across an untouched groove and the prepared groove. The shoulders should match, with no fresh flat spots or rounded crests. Under raking light, the repair boundary should taper without a polished stripe.

Apply primer to a small complete profile—flat, shoulders and groove—using the intended application method. Confirm coverage without pooling in the bottom or starving the shoulder. If the paint bridges the groove, correct application technique rather than widening the recess with more sanding. The shed is ready when its substrate is sound and the coating has an honest key, not when the manufactured texture has been erased.
