RV Gelcoat: Build a Test Area Before You Reach for Sandpaper
A chalky RV sidewall does not automatically need sandpaper. Before removing material, establish what the surface is, what cleaning changes, and whether a small restoration test produces a stable improvement. A test area should help you choose between maintenance, controlled restoration, and professional repair. It should not become an excuse to keep cutting until every mark disappears.
This approach applies to a panel confirmed to have exposed gelcoat. Painted fiberglass, decorative graphics, protective films, and previously repaired areas can require different care. Identify those surfaces before choosing a compound, cleaner, or abrasive.
Start with the panel, not a grit number
Check the RV manufacturer's care instructions and any repair records. Look for boundaries between graphics and the surrounding surface, differences in gloss, overspray, patch edges, cracks, or places where the underlying material appears exposed. Photograph these details before washing so you can distinguish existing damage from changes made during the test.
A smooth, dull area and a cracked, lifting area are different problems. Abrasion may improve some superficial oxidation, but it cannot restore missing material or repair a failing bond. If a panel flexes unusually, has widespread cracking, or shows a questionable repair, have the construction assessed before attempting a cosmetic correction.
Choose a shaded working location that meets the cleaner's temperature requirements. A hot sidewall can make products dry too quickly and make the comparison difficult to repeat. Keep the test away from sharp edges, seams, fittings, and graphics.
Make a comparison you can trust
Select a small, representative flat area and retain an adjacent untouched reference. Avoid choosing only the worst damage: it may not represent the majority of the panel. Equally, a sheltered patch beneath a fitting may be much healthier than the exposed surface you intend to restore.
Use photographs and a simple sketch to record the positions. If you use masking tape, first confirm compatibility and remove it according to its instructions. Tape is a boundary marker, not protection against an abrasive running into a decal or lifting a weak coating.
Write down the cleaner, dilution if applicable, applicator, drying conditions, and the appearance before treatment. Those details are more useful than a note saying that the panel received “a quick polish.” Keep the same lighting and viewing direction when comparing results.
Clean before judging oxidation
Wash using a product approved for the actual surface. Rinse and let the area dry before judging its appearance. Do not combine cleaners or jump to a stronger chemical because a stain survived the first pass. Different contamination may require a specific compatible treatment, and some discoloration is within the surface rather than sitting on it.

A wet panel can look temporarily darker and glossier. Photographing it while wet and comparing that image with a dry reference can exaggerate the improvement. Make the decision from a clean, dry comparison, not from the moment when water hides the surface texture.
Try the least aggressive approved restoration step
If the panel is suitable for restoration, follow the selected gelcoat product's directions on the test area. Use its specified applicator and working method. Do not borrow speed, pad, or sanding instructions from a paint-correction process intended for automotive clear coat.
Keep the test controlled. Changing the compound, applicator, pressure, and number of passes together makes it impossible to identify which change helped. If the first test is unsatisfactory, clean the area as directed, inspect it, and decide whether a different approved process is justified.
Stop when the surface behaves unexpectedly. A newly visible patch, a sharp change in color, exposed fibers, or damage at a boundary is a reason to reassess. Continued cutting is not a diagnostic method for an unknown panel.
Read the result before considering sanding
A useful result falls into one of three groups:
- Cleaning solves the appearance problem. Continue the compatible maintenance process; abrasive restoration adds unnecessary work.
- An approved polishing test gives a uniform, acceptable dry result. Repeat that demonstrated process carefully, retaining inspection breaks.
- The test leaves an unacceptable or suspicious result. Identify the remaining defect and obtain a repair or restoration recommendation before escalating.
For example, suppose washing removes gray runoff but leaves an even dull film. A gelcoat-specific restoration test improves that film without exposing a contrasting patch. That supports repeating the tested process on comparable areas. It does not establish permission to sand an unrelated cracked section near a window.

Keep the test record with the vehicle
Record the accepted result, the exact surface tested, and any areas excluded from treatment. Photograph the dry finish again after the final protection step has been applied as directed. Keep your observations separate from assumptions about remaining thickness: a good-looking test does not measure the gelcoat.
The goal is a repeatable decision. You should be able to explain why the chosen process suits this panel, what improvement it delivered, and where you will stop. If those answers are uncertain, resolving the uncertainty is the next step—not choosing a coarser sheet.
