PETG Sign Edge: Deburr It, Bond It, or Polish It?

Start with the edge’s job, not a grit number

A freshly cut PETG sign panel can have three very different acceptable edges. An edge hidden in a frame only needs to be safe and dimensionally correct. An edge entering a specified bond or coating process needs the surface that process calls for. An exposed edge expected to read like clear glass needs a much longer finishing route.

Those targets are not interchangeable. Sanding a framed edge until it looks glossy wastes time. Sanding the broad clear face to cure one rough edge creates a new optical defect.

PLASKOLITE’s VIVAK PETG fabrication guide supplies the useful boundary: PETG can be sanded wet or dry, dry sanding may gum, wet sanding produces a smoother finish, and sanding alone does not restore high gloss. It recommends fine-grit wet sanding for smoother edges, but it does not prescribe one universal grit ladder for every sign.

If the drawing, client sample or finishing specification does not identify one of those outcomes, pause. “Smooth” is not precise enough for transparent sheet.

Confirm that the stock is actually PETG as well. Acrylic and polycarbonate can look similar but have different fabrication and chemical-compatibility limits. Keep the manufacturer’s masking in place where its fabrication instructions permit; it helps protect the face while the edge is handled.

Fix a gummed cut at the saw first

A wavy, melted-looking or heavily gummed edge is evidence about the cutting operation, not a reason to start sanding the whole sign. VIVAK’s sawing guidance ties cut quality to the blade, tooth design, feed, support and heat control. Correct those variables on scrap before producing another finished panel.

Use the rejected offcut as the setup coupon. A repeat cut that emerges clean can save far more work than trying to flatten every ridge afterward. Also check the part against its final channel or fixture before removing much material; an attractive edge that is now undersize is still a failed part.

For a small remaining burr, support the sheet, work only on the edge and make the minimum controlled passes needed to break the sharpness. Do not roll the paper onto the clear face. A narrow, flat backer helps keep a straight edge straight, while a tiny deliberate arris is easier to repeat than an uncontrolled rounded corner.

Wet-refine an exposed edge without promising gloss

When the approved target genuinely calls for a smoother exposed edge, test the entire proposed process on the same PETG stock. Begin with a fine grade that removes the actual saw pattern without excessive work, as established on the coupon. Keep the abrasive and edge wet, use light supported strokes, rinse away slurry and stop periodically to inspect the dry result.

Dry inspection matters because water temporarily masks haze and fine scratches. Change to a finer grade only after the current pattern is uniform; a random deep line is a reason to correct that line’s stage, not to press harder with a finer sheet.

If the coupon shows that 600 grit is an appropriate fine wet-refinement stage for the specified finish, an available 10-pack of 600-grit waterproof silicon-carbide sheets is a practical small-project quantity. That product choice does not turn 600 into a PETG standard. A rougher saw cut may need a different first stage, while a bond or paint system may specify another surface entirely.

Expect the sanded edge to be satin or hazy when dry. The VIVAK guide explicitly says further finishing is required to restore high gloss. Approve that later process—polishing, a compatible finishing method, or remaking the part—before committing a customer-facing edge. Do not improvise flame or solvent polishing on PETG.

Keep sanding off a clean optical face

Static dust on a sign face is a cleaning problem. It is not evidence that the face needs abrasion. VIVAK’s printing guidance treats cleaning and static control as preparation steps and mentions ionized air as one option; it does not direct the fabricator to sand a clear face clean.

Use the sheet and print-system maker’s approved cleaning method, a clean workspace and clean handling. Lift debris rather than rubbing it across the face. If a face scratch remains after cleaning, compare its visibility in the installed lighting with the haze and distortion that face sanding would introduce. Replacement can be the more controlled choice for a high-clarity sign.

The same distinction applies to coating or bonding. Prepare only the area named by the current adhesive, ink or coating instructions. A general-purpose scuff on the entire panel is not a substitute for system compatibility, and a glossy-looking edge is not proof of bond readiness.

A short cut-edge demonstration

The useful idea in the clip is localization: correct the cut area with short controlled passes and check it often. Select the actual PETG grade from the stock condition, finish target and approved coupon—not from a generic plastic demonstration.

Approve the result dry and in context

Clean and dry the coupon and finished edge using the approved method. View them against both light and dark backgrounds, then from the angles a visitor will see. Check three things separately: safety, geometry and appearance.

The job is complete when the edge is free of sharp burrs, the part still fits, and its dry texture matches the agreed sample. If the face has gained haze, the edge has become rounded or the cut still gums after the saw setup is corrected, stop and remake or re-plan the part instead of enlarging the sanded area.
