Pinholes Over Resin Artwork: Spot Fill or Full Recoat?
A drop of fresh resin can fill a small cavity and still leave a visible patch. On clear-coated artwork, that patch may be more distracting than the original pinhole because the surrounding image makes changes in reflection easy to see.
For a seamless face, plan the local defect removal and the full-surface recoat together. ArtResin's spot-repair guidance recommends sanding and recoating the entire piece instead of pouring a small patch over the old coat. The procedure here is for artwork coated with that resin system; a deep casting, marine laminate or unknown tabletop coating needs its own repair instructions.
Decide what the defect allows you to remove
Look at the clean, dry piece from above and at a low angle. Locate the hole, then check how close the artwork lies beneath it. A raised speck in a thick clear layer gives you room to level. A crater whose bottom already reaches the image does not.
Do not enlarge a hole just to discover its depth. If you can see exposed paper, pigment or another part of the artwork, stop abrasion there. A sanding block cannot distinguish expendable resin from the image you want to preserve. Photograph the defect and resolve the repair with the resin supplier before covering damaged or contaminated artwork.
A useful comparison is a tiny bubble near the center of a resin-coated print versus one over a raised painted detail. The visible opening might be the same size, but the second location has less clear material above the art. The surrounding coating thickness matters more than the pinhole diameter.
Prepare for another coat, not for polishing
Wait until the resin is ready for the manufacturer's sand-and-recoat method. Sticky or soft material needs a cure-failure repair; grinding it into the surrounding surface will not create a sound base.
ArtResin's between-coats instructions use coarse 80-grit paper on cured areas, followed by complete debris removal. They specifically warn against sanding down into the artwork. This is adhesion preparation, so a polishing progression to very fine paper adds work without serving the next operation.

Stop and inspect frequently. The goal is to remove the correctable imperfection and prepare the face while retaining clear cover over the image. Do not keep lowering the surrounding surface to reach an inaccessible bubble deep below it.
Clear the holes before adding resin
Sanding dust can lodge in a cavity and make it look filled. Clean the prepared face and examine each opening again. ArtResin permits a damp wipe and soft brushing for debris removal; let the surface dry completely before recoating. Keep any moisture away from exposed, vulnerable artwork.
Before mixing, level the support, arrange protection for the edges and underside, and have a dust cover ready. These preparations avoid having to handle or tilt the piece once the new coat is flowing.
The manufacturer's nominal self-leveling layer is about 1/8 inch, or 3 mm. Use its coverage guidance to mix enough for the entire face. A barely wet smear chosen to save resin is a different application from the specified coat. Measure and mix accurately, spread according to the product instructions and protect the piece while it cures.

Judge the repair after cure in the lighting where the artwork will be displayed. Check the entire reflection, not only the former hole: a continuous face, intact image and clean cured coating are the result you were preparing for.
