Wobbly Wooden Chair? Check the Floor, Glides, and Joints First

Do not shorten a chair leg until you know the chair is the problem. A worn glide, uneven floor or moving joint can produce a wobble that sanding cannot reliably fix. Removing wood first may leave the chair wrong when it moves to another spot or receives new floor protectors.

A useful inspection separates three things: the surface beneath the chair, the parts attached to its feet, and the rigidity of the chair itself.

Does the wobble follow the chair?

With nobody seated, place the chair in its usual position and gently check which pair of feet it rocks between. Move it to another firm area and repeat. Rotate it so the same feet rest on different parts of the floor.

If the wobble changes markedly with location, investigate the floor before cutting the chair. Tile edges, a soft rug and an uneven board can each change the support. This comparison identifies a location effect; it does not certify that a floor or benchtop is perfectly flat.

For a workshop check, use a rigid reference surface large enough for all four feet and verified flat with an appropriate straightedge. Do not balance the chair on a loose piece of glass or an undersized support.

Inspect what actually touches the floor

Turn the chair over on a padded support. Compare all four glides or felt pads. Look for a missing pad, doubled layers, trapped debris, a bent fixing or one pad worn much thinner than the rest.

Correct a mismatched set before evaluating leg length. If the chair uses adjustable feet, follow their adjustment method rather than sanding the surrounding wood.

A conforming glide may also suit a sound chair that encounters small support differences. Rockler's self-leveling glide description explains that its flexible cushion accommodates leg and floor differences. Check the chosen glide's footprint, attachment and suitability for the flooring. A glide is not a repair for a cracked leg or loose joint.

Look for movement above the feet

While the chair is supported, examine the leg-to-seat connections, rails and stretchers. Gently check for independent movement at a joint. An opening glue line or shifting mechanical connection changes the geometry every time the chair is loaded.

If a joint moves, stop the foot-leveling work and keep the chair out of use until it has a sound repair. Re-gluing, repairing a damaged joint and tightening a designed mechanical connection are different tasks. Do not force a generic adhesive into every opening and assume the structure is restored.

After repair and the required cure, repeat the support checks. The chair's settled position may have changed. Measurements made while the frame was loose are not a reliable trimming plan.

When a foot really needs correction

Foot sanding becomes reasonable only when the chair is rigid, the glides are accounted for and an uneven contact pattern repeats on a verified flat reference. At that point, distinguish a small rough projection from an actual leg-length error.

A rough projection on a bare, solid-wood foot may need a small hand-sanding correction. Choose the abrasive for the wood and the finish that will protect it afterward. General Finishes includes 120 grit at the start of several raw-wood preparation schedules. Where that grade fits the selected schedule, 120-grit sheets in a 10-pack can be cut to a firm support. Preserve the original contact plane and inspect frequently; grit selection does not establish how much leg can safely be shortened.

Do not sand the foot that hangs in the air simply because it is easiest to identify. Removing material there increases its distance from the reference surface. Work out the intended seating plane and the necessary correction to the supporting feet before altering their lengths. Splayed legs make that geometry especially easy to misread.

If shortening is needed, use a controlled layout or a furniture repairer. Preserve the intended foot angle, then restore finish to exposed end grain and fit the chosen protectors. Recheck on the reference and in the room after the finish reaches its service condition.

The stopping point is a structurally sound chair with consistent foot protection and stable support where it will be used. A newly smooth patch on one foot does not establish any of those conditions.
