Static Dust on Acrylic: Clean It Before Sanding Again

Dust that returns as soon as you wipe an acrylic part does not necessarily mean it needs more sanding. Clean it with an acrylic-compatible method, inspect it, and only then decide whether a real scratch remains. Repeated dry rubbing can keep attracting particles and can drag those particles across the surface.

The recommendations here concern confirmed PMMA acrylic sheet. Do not transfer them automatically to polycarbonate, coated lenses, glazing films, or an unidentified clear plastic.

First separate loose particles from permanent marks

Look at the part under diffuse light, then from another angle. A particle that moves with approved cleaning is contamination, not a defect to sand away. A line that remains in the same position after cleaning may be a scratch. Broad haze can also come from residue, a damaged coating, or prior abrasion.

Do not rub aggressively to “test” the mark. Support the part on a clean, nonabrasive surface and keep gritty cloths away from it. If a part has cracks or crazing, stop and seek material-specific guidance rather than trying to erase the damage with sandpaper.

Use acrylic care instructions for cleanup

ACRYLITE's cleaning and maintenance guidance advises against dry rubbing and describes a compatible antistatic cleaner for its material. The product instructions matter: a general-purpose household cleaner is not automatically suitable for clear acrylic.

Use clean, soft materials and the approved cleaning method. Remove the source of fresh dust around the part as well. A clean surface placed back onto a dusty bench or wiped with the cloth from a coarse-sanding step will not stay clean for long.

For an already finished acrylic display piece, a manufacturer-approved antistatic product may be appropriate. For a part about to be painted, bonded, printed, or coated, verify compatibility with that next operation first. A product that improves day-to-day appearance can leave an unwanted residue in a fabrication process.

The goal is a clean inspection condition, not a promise of a dust-free room. If the part attracts fresh dust while nearby sanding is continuing, move final inspection to a cleaner area or sequence the jobs so they do not overlap.

Sand only when the clean surface still needs correction

Abrasive removes material; it is not an antistatic treatment. A scratch repair should have its own tested sanding-and-polishing sequence. Start only as coarse as the defect requires and the part can tolerate. Sanding usually leaves a matte surface that needs the appropriate polishing stage to regain clarity.

Why does the dust come back after polishing?

Check the cloth, work support, surrounding activity, and the material maker's cleaning guidance. Dry buffing and a dusty environment can undermine an otherwise clean handoff. More sanding adds another source of residue without addressing those conditions.

If approved cleaning removes the particles and the acrylic is acceptably clear, stop. Protect the finished part using a material-compatible method rather than continuing to rub it in pursuit of an inspection condition the workspace cannot maintain.
