Gelcoat Pinholes: What to Repair Before Sanding
Tiny holes that remain after you wipe a sanded gelcoat surface are a reason to pause. An open pore is missing material; finer sandpaper cannot fill it. Continuing to lower the surrounding surface may expose more porosity while leaving less coating for the eventual repair.
This guide helps you separate a local cosmetic repair from a surface that needs a broader repair plan. It applies to accessible gelcoated panels and fittings, not structural damage or diagnosis of an underwater blistering problem.
First decide what you are looking at
Clean a small inspection area using the cleaner approved for the coating, remove residue and let it dry. Look from two light angles. Water, polishing residue and dirt can change how a tiny defect looks, so do not judge it only while the surface is wet.

These observations sort the next question; they do not establish the original manufacturing cause. A photograph of a white speck alone cannot tell you whether it is trapped residue, an air void or a different defect.
Choose the repair system before the abrasive
Two repair instructions can both be correct and still be incompatible with each other. An epoxy barrier-coating procedure is not automatically a polyester gelcoat repair procedure.
For example, WEST SYSTEM's fiberglass repair manual describes forcing freshly applied epoxy into pinholes in prepared laminate and fairing compound during the first barrier coat. TotalBoat's gelcoat instructions list compatible substrates and restrict direct application over epoxy materials. They also require contamination removal before abrasion and full cure before finishing. Choose a repair material and topcoat that explicitly work together; follow their preparation, mixing and cure instructions, including ventilation and protective equipment. Before opening the repair material, write down four things: the substrate you are repairing, the filler or gelcoat product, its required surface preparation, and the intended final coating. An unanswered item here is a reason to identify the system, not to buy another grit.
Repair first, then level only the excess
For a local cosmetic repair, the useful order is preparation, filling, cure, inspection and controlled finishing. Keep the repaired spot easy to find while avoiding marks that contaminate the bonding surface. Remove dust between operations using the repair manufacturer's method.
Inspect the cured repair before sanding it flush. If a cavity remains, decide whether it needs another application. WEST SYSTEM's fairing instructions likewise separate sanding the cured fairing material from cleaning and filling remaining voids. Sanding surrounding material down to the bottom of a missed void changes the contour instead of completing the fill.
Use a small supported abrasive area so you can see where material is being removed. On a curve, the support should follow the intended contour. Check often enough that a widening dull patch or an exposed edge is noticed before you lose the boundary of the repair. A hole that reappears after cleanup has not been solved by the temporary appearance of slurry.
Where fine waterproof sheets belong
Fine paper belongs after the repair is sound and nearly level. TotalBoat describes progressing to at least 1500 grit or finer before its compound-and-polish steps, while cautioning against sanding through the gelcoat. That endpoint is specific to finishing a suitable cured surface; it is not a starting grit for every repair.

Two questions that prevent unnecessary sanding
The holes disappear when wet. Are they repaired? No. Judge the cleaned, dry surface. A temporary change in reflection does not show that a cavity has been filled.
Will polishing compound close the holes? Compound can improve the surrounding finish or lodge in a pore, but it is not a specified structural or cosmetic repair filler. Resolve the open defect before judging the final gloss.
