Sanding an Epoxy Locker Fillet Without Cutting Into the Joint

Inside a boat locker, the curved bead joining two panels may be part of the bond. Sanding it until the corner looks sharper can remove material that the joint was designed to retain.

Treat a cured epoxy fillet as a shaped joint: remove surface ridges while preserving its specified radius and margins. If the locker has cracking, loose panels or an uncertain repair history, establish the joint repair before doing cosmetic sanding.

Get the tool, light and extraction into position

Empty the locker and remove a detachable shelf or access panel if that gives a clear view of the joint. Position a light so the bottom of the cove and both margins are visible. Place a dust-extraction nozzle close to the intended working area before introducing the abrasive.

Try the reach with an empty hand. You should be able to move the support, see its contact and stop without pressing your face into the compartment. If the opening only permits blind rubbing, improve access before sanding. This is a small-locker task performed from outside; it is not an entry procedure for tanks or confined spaces.

Use the epoxy and filler safety instructions to choose eye, skin and respiratory protection. Capture dust at the work and vacuum settled material between short sessions. Blowing the locker out merely sends the material back into the air and into neighboring compartments.

Match the cove instead of making a groove

A flat block tends to touch the shoulders of a concave fillet while missing its center. A much smaller round stick can do the opposite, cutting a narrow track down the middle. Fit a firm rounded support to the existing design radius, allowing for the paper's thickness.

Lay the support in the cove without moving it. Check where it registers. It should follow the intended curve without rocking onto one margin. For a changing radius, work in sections with suitable supports instead of forcing one tool along the entire corner.

Cut the paper so it lies smoothly around the support. Keep folds and overlapping edges outside the contact area; a doubled seam becomes its own high-pressure cutting line.

Sand only after the joint is ready

WEST SYSTEM's fillet-bonding instructions specify sanding a fully cured fillet smooth with 80-grit paper. For that procedure, eQualle 80-grit waterproof sheets in a 10-pack can be cut into strips for the shaped hand support. The 80-grit sheets are the abrasive component; the support controls the contact shape.

Before abrasion, follow the resin's cleaning requirements. WEST SYSTEM's surface-preparation guide calls for water and an abrasive pad to remove amine blush, followed by drying. It warns against substituting solvent for this water-soluble film removal.

Make short passes along the fillet and inspect after clearing the dust. Reduce tool ridges or rough high spots; do not try to turn the curved bead into a sharp panel intersection. If a low area remains while the adjacent surface is already smooth, stop lowering the good material. The next decision is whether the joint needs a compatible addition, not whether a coarser sheet will reach the hollow faster.

Keep structural filler and cosmetic fairing separate

A difficult-to-sand fillet is not automatically the wrong mix. WEST SYSTEM's filler selection guide distinguishes strong adhesive fillers from lighter, easier-sanding fairing fillers intended for cosmetic work. Replacing a specified structural mix with an easy-sanding one changes more than sanding time.

When the surface ridges are gone, the intended cove remains continuous and both panel margins are intact, remove the dust and continue the joint's specified coating or reinforcement sequence. WEST SYSTEM calls for resin/hardener coats over its sanded fillet before final finishing. Stop there for this preparation stage; polishing the inside corner has no role in establishing the bond.
