Why sanding breadboard transitions is different

Too fine, too soon and you’ll simply polish highs while subtle ridges remain, which pop in raking light after finish.   10. De-dust and preview. Vacuum with a brush tip and wipe with a clean microfiber. A light mist of water (on bare wood) or your system’s panel wipe (on sealed surfaces) helps preview scratch uniformity. If bands show at the joint, re-enter with two full passes at 180 on the long block—do not spot-sand.
  11. Finish within the window. Apply your chosen finish per the tech sheet. Oil and oil/varnish blends love a clean 180 scratch. Special cases

Proud breadboard after glue-up: If the end is obviously high, take a sharp block plane or cabinet scraper first to knock the ridge, then enter at 120 with the long block. Don’t try to sand a big ridge flat—it risks a dish.

Seasonal movement showing: Breadboards are designed to float; in dry seasons the field may shrink a hair. Sand for flush at the center, not the very ends, to avoid rounding the shoulder as the panel moves later.

  • Bridge the joint, always. Every pass should span long grain and end grain together so you don’t dig a trench at the line.
  • Mind the light. Inspect from both directions with raking light. What you miss now will scream after the first coat.
  • Document your recipe. Note grits, stroke directions, and finish brand/sheens so you can match other tables or leaves later.

Aftercare

  • Let finish cure hard before heavy use; soft films imprint at the shoulder under plates and elbows.
  • Clean with pH-neutral soap and soft cloths; avoid scouring powders that haze the finish.
  • If hairline ridges appear after a season of movement, denib the film with 320 on a tiny hard backer and add a maintenance coat—avoid cutting into bare wood at the joint.
