Cold-Rolled vs Hot-Rolled Steel: Why the Sanding Start Differs

Hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel can arrive with different surface conditions, but the rolling label alone does not tell you how much sanding is needed. Mill scale, oil, rust, pickling, existing coatings, and the required final finish matter more than a generic grit ladder.

Inspect the supplied surface and read the fabrication or coating specification before deciding what must be removed.

Identify the material as delivered

Check the purchase description and material documentation. Hot-rolled material may be supplied with scale or in a pickled condition. Cold-rolled material may carry protective oil or other contamination even when it appears smooth.

SSAB's processing guidance distinguishes pickled and non-pickled material and notes the abrasive character of mill scale. Its discussion concerns steel processing, but it reinforces an important preparation distinction: the surface layer is a separate consideration from the steel beneath it.

Do not identify a metal grade or a coating from color alone. Unknown plated, painted, or treated material needs identification before dust-producing work.

Separate cleaning, scale removal, and scratch refinement

Cleaning removes the contaminants that the coating or fabrication process identifies. Scale removal, when required, removes an existing surface layer. Scratch refinement controls the marks left by the preparation process. Trying to perform all three with one fine sheet can waste abrasive and leave an inconsistent surface.

Do not use a bright-metal appearance as the only acceptance criterion. Some jobs require a defined cleanliness and profile; others preserve a particular mill appearance.

Compare scratches only after equivalent preparation

If you want to compare a hand-sanded finish on two steels, first bring both to the appropriate, documented starting condition. Use comparable abrasive construction, support, direction, and cleaning. Inspect the resulting surface under the same light.

For an approved hand-refinement stage calling for 120 grit, 120-grit sheets in a 25-pack provide a defined test input. They are not a substitute for a specified blasting, power-tool cleaning, or other scale-removal process.

Stop when the specified surface is reached

Do not keep sanding simply to make two different supplied steels look identical. Continued local work can soften an edge, dish a face, or reveal defects that require a different repair.

Record the supplied condition, cleaning, removal method, and final abrasive separately. That record explains why one piece needed more preparation without turning “hot rolled always needs coarse paper” into a rule for the next job.
