Switching Abrasives: Why a Grit Conversion Chart Is Only a Start
A grit conversion chart helps you understand labels, but it cannot guarantee that a replacement abrasive will leave the same surface. When you change brands, backing, mineral, or abrasive format, treat the chart as a starting reference and verify the result on a representative sample.
The practical question is not simply which number looks equivalent. It is whether the replacement removes the previous scratch efficiently, preserves the required shape, and leaves a finish that the next operation can handle. A short comparison can answer that question before the change reaches an entire batch.
Read the full designation
Record every part of the original abrasive description: manufacturer, product line, grade designation, backing, format, and whether the process is wet or dry. A printed number without its grading system is incomplete information. Do not add a P prefix to a sheet merely because a conversion table offers a nearby P-grade.

A chart does not establish the grading system of an unlabeled or ambiguously described product.
A micron value also needs context. Ask what the supplier means by it and which product specification applies. Do not infer an exact scratch depth from a particle-size label. The abrasive construction and the way you use it affect the working result.
Define the result you need to preserve
Write an acceptance statement before testing. For example: “Remove the preceding scratch on this primer without changing the edge profile, then leave a surface accepted by the specified topcoat process.” That is more useful than “make the new paper look like the old paper.”
Include the next operation. A sample that looks smooth under room lighting may still require too much polishing, show scratches under a transparent finish, or be unsuitable for the coating's preparation instructions. Evaluate the whole transition instead of the isolated sanding step.
If the original process is already failing, do not use it as an unquestioned standard. Identify whether the replacement is meant to match an accepted finish or correct a known problem. Those are different experiments and need different records.
Build a controlled comparison
Use two comparable areas on the same kind of offcut or test panel. Prepare them through the same preceding operation. Label the back or use a separate sketch so the comparison stays clear without introducing marks into the working face.
On the first area, use the established abrasive and process. On the second, change only the abrasive under evaluation. Keep the support, method, inspection interval, and cleaning approach as consistent as practical. If a replacement requires a different tool or backing, record that as a complete process change instead of calling it a simple grade substitution.
Use fresh abrasive for both starting tests. Comparing a fresh replacement with an exhausted original can make the new product appear more aggressive for reasons unrelated to grading. Similarly, a partly loaded control is not a stable reference for scratch uniformity.
Check four outcomes
First, inspect whether the previous scratch has actually been removed. An overall matte appearance can coexist with isolated deeper lines. Clean the surface as specified, change the light direction, and inspect more than the center of the sample.
Second, check geometry. Look at edges, narrow lands, and transitions where the support contacts the work. A softer backing can conform differently from a rigid block even when the printed grade is similar.
Third, record working behavior. Note rapid loading, tearing, difficulty controlling the stroke, and changes in cutting as the test progresses. These observations help explain a result, but they should not replace inspection of the surface itself.
Fourth, complete the next relevant operation on the test piece. That may be another abrasive step, polishing, primer, stain, or a specified topcoat. Compare the accepted dry or cured result after the product's required interval. Do not approve a change solely because the intermediate surface looks attractive while wet.
Interpret a mismatch without random grit changes
If the replacement leaves a deeper pattern, first check whether the format, backing, pressure, and cleanliness match your intended comparison. Changing the grade immediately can hide a support or contamination problem. If the process requires a different refinement step, confirm that the downstream product allows it.
If the replacement cuts slowly, inspect loading and abrasive condition before declaring that the nominal grade is too fine. If it removes the earlier scratch but changes the contour, the support may be the more important variable.
Where your process calls for 400-grit sheets, 400-grit sheets, 25-pack are a product option to evaluate. That label alone should not be treated as an exact substitute for a micron-rated film or another manufacturer's graded system.
Save a qualified substitution
Record the tested material, original abrasive, replacement, support, method, cleaning procedure, and final result. Keep a labeled sample or photograph when it can help the next operator. Include any limits: accepted on flat primer, for example, does not mean approved on thin veneer or an optical plastic edge.

Recheck the choice when the material, coating system, tool, or abrasive construction changes. The goal is a reliable surface transition. The conversion chart gets you to a plausible test; the representative finished sample tells you whether that test succeeded.
