Is Your Resin Print Ready for Sanding? Check Wash, Dry, and Cure
A resin print can feel solid while still needing its specified wash, drying, or post-cure process. Sanding too early can smear residue, load abrasive, and damage small details. Establish that the part has completed the resin manufacturer's required post-processing before choosing the first grit.
Do not treat a generic “bake, then sand” instruction as a recipe for every photopolymer resin.
Identify the resin and intended use
Record the printer, exact resin, and manufacturer processing instructions. Different formulations can have different washing limits, drying needs, and post-cure settings. Parts intended for a regulated or validated application may also have restrictions on subsequent finishing.
Formlabs' basic SLA finishing sequence separates washing, drying, post-curing, support removal, and optional finishing. Follow the sequence and exceptions for your actual resin rather than transferring settings from a different formulation.
A print made by another process is not evidence that an SLA resin is ready. The workshop image is a general illustration of a printed part, not a resin identification or cure test.
Resolve residue before abrasion
Check that the prescribed wash has reached recesses and that the part has dried as instructed. A tacky or contaminated surface is a reason to revisit processing, not to cover it with progressively finer scratch marks.
Do not add extra heat or extend a wash indefinitely because a part feels wrong. For example, Formlabs' High Temp Resin guidance places specific limits on washing and emphasizes drying before post-curing. Those requirements belong to that resin and demonstrate why a universal treatment is unreliable.
Use the specified curing equipment and settings. A household cooking oven is not a substitute for a controlled resin post-cure process.
Plan what must stay unchanged
Before sanding, identify mating faces, holes, thin walls, embossed text, and sharp details. Decide whether a support mark can be reduced without altering a required dimension. Use appropriate work holding that supports the part without crushing it.

Start on a representative sample
Use a spare print or permitted area with the same material and processing history. Select the finest effective starting abrasive consistent with the required finish, then inspect frequently. Protect fine details rather than sanding the whole part to erase one local mark.
If a validated hand-finishing trial calls for 400 grit, 400-grit sheets in a 25-pack provide a defined abrasive input. That is not a default starting grade for every resin or geometry.
The sandpaper-tearing guide helps with support and handling problems. Follow the resin SDS for dust, skin contact, and waste controls; wet residue is not automatically safe to discharge.

Verify the finished part
Clean with the approved method and check dimensions, detail, and the intended coating or appearance. Record the complete wash, dry, cure, and sanding sequence. The goal is a correctly processed part that meets its function, not simply a smooth surface over an uncertain cure history.
