Oil vs Waterborne Finish: Test the Final Sanding Grade

Do not choose the final sanding grade from the words “oil” or “waterborne” alone. The complete system includes the wood, any stain or dye, the topcoat, and the manufacturer's preparation instructions. Two products in the same broad family can call for different preparation.

A small, controlled finishing test is more useful than a universal grit chart when you are deciding between two systems for the same project.

Compare actual products, not broad categories

Write down the exact stain and topcoat combinations. Check whether the products are approved together, whether a conditioner or sealer is specified, and which sanding step belongs to bare wood rather than an intermediate coat.

General Finishes' preparation guidance distinguishes water-based stains, oil-based stains, and clear topcoats, and also considers wood type. That is a useful warning against treating every waterborne finish as one process.

Do not transfer a between-coat grade onto bare wood simply because it is printed on the same label.

Make matched samples

Use offcuts from the actual stock, preferably including the same face and edge grain that will be visible on the project. Label the backs with the product system, preparation sequence, and date.

For each finishing system, test its specified preparation first. If the manufacturer permits an alternative final grade, give that alternative a separate sample. Keep the starting surface, support, cleaning, stain application, and coat coverage as consistent as practical.

If the approved comparisons call for 150 and 180 grit, 150-grit sheets and 180-grit sheets provide two clearly identified inputs. They are not a recommendation to stop every finish at one of those numbers.

Compare after the complete finish schedule

Look for more than smoothness. Examine visible sanding lines, stain color, blotching, raised fibers, clarity, and the appearance of the edge. Allow the samples to reach the coating's specified evaluation condition before judging the result.

A pleasing color does not establish adhesion or durability. Where a system calls for an adhesion or compatibility test, follow its documented method.

Keep the winning sample with the work instruction

Record the result in your sanding grit preset, including the exact finish system and any conditions that would trigger another test. Keep the physical sample so the next operator can compare against a real surface.

If both systems pass, choose between them using the desired appearance and the products' application and service requirements. Sanding prepares the substrate for that choice. It cannot make an unapproved coating combination reliable or make two different finishes look identical.
