Choose 800 grit when a surface still needs visible fine-leveling work. Choose 1000 grit when the surface is already uniform and the goal is to refine the scratch pattern before a still finer abrasive, compound, coating, or inspection step. Because the grades are close, 800 is not automatically required before 1000. Test a small area and use the finest grit that removes the actual defect efficiently.

Both grits are fine abrasives. Neither is intended to remove deep damage quickly, and neither guarantees a glossy finish. Gloss and clarity depend on the substrate, coating thickness, full sequence, cleanliness, and the polishing or recoating process that follows.

When 800 grit is the better choice

800 grit belongs earlier in a fine-sanding sequence. It can reduce a uniform 600-grit pattern, level small surface texture, or begin controlled wet sanding when a test confirms that finer paper is too slow. It is often useful on compatible cured coatings, plastics, resin, gelcoat, and metal finishes, but those materials do not share one universal grit schedule.

Use light pressure and short passes. On a coated surface, protect edges, raised lines, and thin areas because they have less material above the substrate. Clean and inspect after each short cycle. Stop using 800 grit when the defect is gone and one consistent 800-grit pattern remains.

When 1000 grit is the better choice

1000 grit is the more conservative starting point when the defect is shallow and the surface is already flat. It refines rather than reshapes. On a compatible surface it may soften an 800-grit pattern, prepare for 1200 or 1500 grit, or create a controlled surface for a manufacturer-approved next step.

If 1000 grit removes the target mark at a reasonable rate, there is no benefit in stepping back to 800. If it produces only a uniformly dull area while the original scratch remains visible, stop. That scratch is probably deeper than the surrounding 1000-grit pattern and should be corrected with an earlier step rather than chased with more pressure.

Wet or dry?

Use the method approved for the abrasive and the workpiece. Wet sanding can carry residue away, reduce loading, and make fine sanding easier to control on water-compatible surfaces. Dry sanding makes the scratch direction and dust easy to monitor and avoids introducing water where it could cause swelling, corrosion, contamination, or electrical risk.

When wet sanding, use clean water, a clean container, and a suitable backing pad. Rinse the surface and paper frequently. A small hard particle trapped under fine paper can create a deep random scratch that forces you back several steps. Do not soak paper unless its product instructions permit it.

When dry sanding, use suitable dust extraction and personal protective equipment for the material. Fine grit does not mean harmless dust.

A reliable test-patch method

  1. Confirm that the coating or material is fully ready to sand.
  2. Clean the test area and protect vulnerable edges.
  3. Try 1000 grit first on a shallow defect.
  4. Inspect after a few light, overlapping passes.
  5. If the defect remains unchanged, try 800 grit on an adjacent test area.
  6. Choose the finest grit that removes the defect without excessive time or pressure.
  7. Refine the complete 800-grit pattern before moving beyond 1000.

Use a squeegee, clean cloth, or rinse method appropriate to the surface so slurry cannot hide the scratch pattern. Raking light helps reveal isolated lines. On clear coatings, a paint-thickness gauge can provide useful context but cannot guarantee how much clear remains at every edge or body line.

Do you need both 800 and 1000?

Use both when 800 is needed for correction and the next process benefits from the finer 1000-grit pattern. Skip 800 when 1000 works efficiently from the start. Skip 1000 only when testing shows that the following grit or process removes the 800 pattern completely and safely.

The purpose of every step is to replace the previous pattern, not merely make the surface look more uniformly dull. If isolated deeper lines survive, advancing to a finer grade usually makes them harder to see without removing them.
