1000 vs 1200 Grit: Does the Extra Step Help Your Test Patch?

Within the same abrasive grading system and comparable product construction, 1200 grit is finer than 1000 grit. That does not mean every sequence needs both. The extra step is useful only if it improves the transition to the next approved operation enough to justify the additional work.

This is a test-patch decision for a suitable coating or solid material, not a recommendation to begin sanding an unknown automotive finish at either grade.

Check what the numbers actually identify

Write down the full abrasive label, including any P prefix, mineral, backing, and wet/dry approval. Norton's explanation of P-graded abrasives identifies the P designation with FEPA grading. Do not quietly add that designation to a product whose grading system has not been verified.

Two sheets with similar numbers can behave differently when backing stiffness, abrasive structure, or support changes. Compare a matched pair before interpreting the result as a grit difference.

Define the next step first

Find the sanding endpoint required by the polishing, coating, or repair system. If that process specifies a different grade or a particular structured abrasive, follow it. Neither 1000 nor 1200 is automatically a direct-to-polish endpoint.

The 1200-grit guide provides context for that grade. For a controlled hand trial that permits these sheets, record the exact 1000-grit abrasive already specified and compare it with the 1200-grit 50-pack only where that product is permitted. Confirm availability before planning the trial.

Compare two permitted routes

Start with matching samples or two permitted areas with the same prior scratch condition. Label them away from the worked face.

On sample A, use the approved sequence without the optional 1200 step. On sample B, add that step only if the system permits the variation. Keep the support, cleaning, and final inspection consistent. Take both through the same approved downstream operation.

Do not stop the comparison when sample B merely feels smoother. Inspect the final appearance and count the total work, including repeated passes, pad cleaning, and any corrective polishing.

Do not turn a trial into a universal ladder

A passing result applies to the tested material, abrasive, support, and finish system. A new coating or different abrasive brand deserves another check. Preserve the failed sample as well as the successful one so “1200 worked better” does not become an unsupported rule.

The practical endpoint is an accepted downstream finish with controlled removal. If you cannot see or measure an advantage from the intermediate step, do not add it just to make the grit sequence look more complete.
