Holograms After Wet Sanding: Diagnose the Polishing Stage

A dark panel can look glossy from straight ahead and still show sweeping trails when the inspection light moves. If those trails appeared during polishing, going back to sandpaper may remove more clear coat without correcting the cause. First identify which stage left the marks.

This guide concerns a sound, repairable automotive clear coat and an approved refinishing process. Unknown film thickness, failed clear, exposed color, or a fragile edge are reasons to stop correction and get the coating assessed.

These are clues, not a film-thickness measurement. View the same area with the light in several positions before deciding.

Recheck one small area

Clean a representative test area using the refinishing system's approved inspection product. Let the surface reach the condition required for inspection. A wet film or oily polish residue can change how scratches appear.

Use a clean finishing pad and the polish specified for the coating and machine. Work a small test section according to that system. Change one variable at a time; switching pad, compound, speed, pressure, and machine together produces a result that is difficult to repeat.

If the sweeping trails clear but a few straight scratches remain, you have probably been treating two different defects. Do not continue aggressive polishing over the entire panel simply because one mark survived.

Why machine choice is only part of the answer

A rotary polisher and a random-orbital polisher move differently, but neither makes a contaminated pad or unfinished sanding stage acceptable. Keep the pad approved for the machine, inspect it frequently, and follow the maker's cleaning and replacement guidance.

The 3M traditional paint-finishing process treats sanding refinement and subsequent compound/polish operations as distinct stages. Its specific grades and equipment belong to that named process; they are not a universal recipe for every clear coat.

When sandpaper belongs back in the process

Return to abrasion only when the defect, remaining coating, and repair procedure justify it. The 2000-grit guide explains the role of that grade in refinement, but a higher number does not establish a safe starting point.

If your approved hand-sanding process specifically calls for this format and grade, 2000-grit sheets in a 50-pack provide an identifiable abrasive for the test. Record the exact product rather than writing only “fine paper.”

Decide from the cleaned finish

Judge the test after the same cleaning and lighting routine used at the beginning. A successful result is a repeatably clear surface with no new trails, not a temporary oily gloss. If another pass merely moves the marks or makes the repair area larger, stop and revisit the pad, product pairing, and original defect before removing more material.
